UofL medical students do well on Match Day, begin planning for life after medical school

Louisville, Ky. -- University of Louisville medical students celebrated Match Day on Thursday, March 18, with festivities at the Greater Louisville Medical Society Building. The highlight, of course, was opening their envelopes from the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), when students found out where they had matched for residency training. A total of 135 UofL students participated in the Match this year and 94 percent of UofL students successfully matched.
Conducted annually by the NRMP, the Match uses a computerized mathematical algorithm, designed to produce a best result by aligning the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.
Among the 131 UofL students that have retained a position, 46 graduates are entering primary care training, in the fields of family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/ pediatrics, pediatrics or preliminary medicine. Twenty-nine percent of matching students will remain in Louisville for at least their first year of training. Six graduates will remain in Kentucky outside of Louisville, and 87 graduates, or 66 percent of those matching, will go out-of-state for residency, with one student planning to return to Louisville after the first year of training.
Internal medicine was the most popular specialty, with 24 matching students. Anesthesiology was the second most popular, with 12 matching students, followed by general surgery at 10. Twelve UofL students matched early for positions either through the military or in ophthalmology or urology, which have early matching options; 114 matched on Thursday and nine students did not match initially. Of those nine, five have obtained positions.
This year’s 2010 Main Residency Match was the largest in NRMP history, encompassing more than 37,000 applicants, 4,100 graduate medical education programs, and 25,500 residency training positions.
