Don't miss Wes Moore, author of The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, share insight on how the decisions you make can impact your life. He also explores how the themes in his book can be applied to action in our community! Lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing.

August 27 - Lecture and Q&A: Adrian McLemore (sponsored by Family Scholar House and The Avenue Church)

10 AM - 12 PM, The Avenue Church, Cardinal Towne

Adrian's story is one of determination and hope- he was raised in the foster care system, and later, as a full time college student, had to assume primary custody of his preschool-aged niece and nephew.  Come take this opportunity to hear his inspiring story and ask him questions.

Approximately 50 agencies serving the Louisville community are looking for volunteers. This year's BinC encourages you to get involved, so find the perfect community service project during lunch!

What effect does music have on you and your life? What role does it play in creating community? Explore these questions and discuss how both Wes Moores used music in their own lives. FREE lunch!

Stephen Peters, founder of the Gentleman's Club and the Ladies' Club, will speak on topics related to the achievement gap.

We're taking the lessons from Wes Moore off the page and putting them into action! Join dynamic discussions about issues facing our community. Service veterans and novices alike will gain awareness and valuable networking opportunities through breakout sessions, a keynote address and lunch. What makes up a community, and how is it created? We'll explore these questions and more from the perspective of the active and veteran military community. We'll also discuss the similarities and differences of community among other groups, reflecting on Wes Moore's experiences both in and out of the military. FREE lunch!

 

November 10 - 5th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture

6:00 – 7:30 p.m., Speed Art Museum Auditorium

Dr. Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, will give a FREE presentation about current mass levels of incarceration among men of color and the social consequences for the country as a whole.

The author Wes Moore calls his book, The Other Wes Moore, a “call to action.” UofL is answering that call! Join First Year Initiatives and the Engage Lead Serve Office in discussing the importance of serving your community, and find out more about how to get involved in the BinC Service Initiative and other campus and community projects. FREE lunch!

 

January 16 - MLK Day of Service

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM, meet in Bigelow Hall (MITC)

Americans across the country will celebrate the national holiday honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by making it "a day ON," not "a day off". The Engage.Lead.Serve Office, in partnership with the Cultural Center and the Anne Braden Institute, will provide multiple service opportunities at a number of different organizations across the city. The kick-off event will include a guest speaker and free brunch for those who attend. Transportation to and from the service sites will be provided. Walk-ins may be accommodated depending on site availability. If you’d like more information, please contact Toni Solis at 852.3436 or stop by the Cultural Center! Volunteer registration is now closed, but walk-in placement will be available. If you're interested in participating, please come to Bigelow Hall (MITC) at 10:00 AM prepared to serve!

Cardinals Teach For America Video Premiere & Alumni Panel

Wednesday, February 1; 6 - 7:30 PM, College of Business Rm. 106

A number of former UofL students have gone on to be part of Teach for America and make change in communities across the nation!  Come check out the video premiere of UofL alumni in the Teach for America corps and enjoy FREE popcorn, followed by a Q&A panel. The panelists you will hear from are UofL alumni, and are now in law school, medical school, or are researchers for national education reform and teacher training!  Hear what they have to say about their experiences, and learn more about Teach for America.

 

February 9 (Pt. 1) & February 16 (Pt. 2) - How to Be a Magnificent Mentor!

Not sure if you have time to mentor formally, but want skills on how to be a more helpful friend, sibling, organization member, fellow student or ally in everyday life? Interested in the benefits of mentoring? At this  two-part workshop, we will cover how to navigate through challenges, exude approachability, trustworthiness and helpfulness, and create appropriate boundaries in relationships. This skill set is also adaptable to situations working with children and youth.  Part 2 of this workshop will be at the same time and place on February 16. The total cost of each two-part workshop is $15.  Proceeds will go to a Bonner Program service site! We ask that everyone try to register before hand, but walk-ins are welcome! Feb. 21—24 - A&S Student Council's 5th Annual Student Art Show

SAC MPR

This year, BinC and FYI are sponsoring one of the 12 categories you can enter your artwork in! Roads Not Taken: An Exploration of the Power of Choice, asks the artist to take inspiration from The Other Wes Moore when responding to the prompt. All mediums are accepted as long as the work responds to the prompt. Winners in this category will receive a Flip Video UltraHD camera (1st place) and a basket of art supplies (2nd and 3rd places). Applications are available in Schneider Hall 104, SAC W310, and online. They are due by Feb. 17 at 4 PM to either location or can be submitted online. Questions? March 22 (Pt. 1) & Mar. 29 (Pt. 2) - How to be a Freakin’ Fantastic Facilitator!

5:00 - 6:30 PM, SAC W312

Attention current and upcoming campus leaders! Build skills to make you more effective facilitating anything from family discussions to camp counseling to organization meetings. At this workshop you’ll hear first-hand accounts from professionals about their successes and failures in facilitating and have the opportunity to release your inner facilitation guru by practicing and sharing your own experiences. Part 2 of this workshop will be at the same time and place on March 29. The total cost of each two-part workshop is $15.  Proceeds will go to a Bonner Program service site! SOUL: Louisville Nature Center

Mar. 31 (10 AM—3 PM)

Come help the Louisville Nature Center prepare their gardens and clean up from winter! Dress for a mess and chilly spring weather. You can sign up for 1 shift, or if you want to work both shifts, just be sure to bring your own lunch. Transportation is NOT provided. If you’re interested, fill out the registration form.

 

April 5 (Pt. 1) & April 12 (Pt. 2) - How to be a Comfortable, Confident Communicator?

5:00 - 6:30 PM, SAC W312

“You just don’t understand me!” “I don’t think you’re really listening to me!” “Can you hear me now?” Join us for this  two-part workshop about how to create the results you desire in a conversation. You will walk away with a strategy for how to effectively communicate what it is that you really want or need from someone else and how to hear and understand what the other person wants. We will also consider the role of body language and interactions with authority figures. Part 2 of this workshop will be at the same time and place on April 12.
