Verification

What is Verification?

Verification is the process of documenting the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It requires the completion of a verification form in addition to submitting supporting financial documentation to the Student Financial Aid Office.

Who is required to submit this document?

You will be notified by email if you are selected for verification. Please login to ULink frequently to review your To Do List. Select: Student Services, Financial Aid, View My To Do List to view and print your verification form(s). If you have a verification form on your To Do List, your FAFSA has been selected for verification. If you have difficulty printing the form, please contact our office at (502) 852-5511, or visit our office to print the form. The form and any attachments can be submitted by mail, in person or by fax as indicated on the last page of the form. Do not e-mail the form or any attachments.

The verification process cannot begin if you and/or your parent(s) are required to file an IRS income tax return and have not yet filed. The only exception is if you and/or your parent(s) have been granted an additional IRS filing extension beyond the automatic six-month extension. If an additional filing extension was granted and you have been selected for verification, please contact our office.

FAFSA Verification Information:

If selected, the verification process requires the University of Louisville Student Financial Aid Office to verify self-reported information from your FAFSA before finalizing your federal aid eligibility. UofL has the authority to request copies of certain financial documents from you and your parent(s) (if dependent) or your spouse (if married).

You may be required to provide a copy of your IRS Tax Return. Follow the instructions on your verification form to determine if you need to attach a copy of your tax return, and to see which year is needed for the FAFSA you are verifying. Tax filers can request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS free of charge. Follow the instructions on our website if you need to request a tax return transcript: IRS Tax Return Transcript. It will take 5-10 business days for the IRS to send the tax return transcript by mail.

  • The 2020-2021 Verification form will request tax/income information for the 2018 tax year.
  • The 2019-2020 Verification form will request tax/income information for the 2017 tax year.

Independent students and parents of dependent students may be required to submit a Confirmation/Verification of Non-Filing from the IRS if they did not file and were not required to file a tax return for the tax year requested on your verification form. Please see our website for more information: Confirmation of Non-Filing.

If there are any differences between your FAFSA application and your verified information, the Student Financial Aid Office may send corrections electronically to have your FAFSA reprocessed, which may require you and/or your parent(s) to report asset or other information not previously provided. You will be notified if additional information is needed.
