Where can I find information about U of L scholarships?

Review our U of L Scholarship webpage for information and links to U of L scholarships.

Where can I find information about outside scholarships?

Review our Outside Scholarship webpage for frequent scholarship postings and links to free scholarship search websites.

What is federal work-study and how can I get it?

Federal work-study is a program where eligible students work a job (typically on-campus) and are paid an hourly wage for their work. Students can use these funds to help support their educational and living expenses. You must indicate on your FAFSA that you are interested in work-study. Visit our work-study webpage for more information.

What is HigherOne?

Disbursed financial aid that exceeds your balance owed the University is considered excess funds. U of L has recently contracted with a company called HigherOne, to handle all student refund services. Funds will be made available to students through the new student refund services offered by HigherOne. If you take no action your refunds will be sent to you in a form of a residual check. The residual check, however, is the least expedient way of receiving your residual funds. Other options include transfer of excess funds to your bank account or to a free HigherOne account. Visit the Bursar's Office webpage for more information. New students will be mailed information from HigherOne.

How do I apply for summer financial aid?

Review the summer section of our how to apply webpage for details on this application process.

I want to apply for Financial Aid. How do I start?

You can learn what type of Financial Aid you can receive by completing a FAFSA form. Follow the instructions on our how to apply webpage.

What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?

This is the name of the academic policy our office must maintain and use to annually evaluate students for federal aid eligibility. This policy is different from any policy your academic department may have. For more information on our policy, visit our SAP webpage.

Why do I have to claim my parents on the FAFSA?

Students are classified as dependent or independent, because federal student aid programs are based on the principal that students and their parents are considered the primary source of support for postsecondary education. For the 2010-2011 academic year, you're an independent student if at least one of the following applies to you:

  • You were born before January 1, 1985;
  • You're married as of the date you filed the FAFSA;
  • You are or will be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program (beyond a bachelor's degree) during the 2009-2010 school year;
  • You have children who receive more than half their support from you;
  • You have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you and will continue to receive more than half their support from you through June 30, 2010;
  • You're parents are deceased or you were an orphan or ward of the court (or were a ward of the court until age 18); or
  • You're a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces ('veteran' includes students who attended a U.S. service academy and who were released under a condition other than dishonorable). And those who are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training

If you are unable to locate or contact your parents to complete the FAFSA or it is a dangerous or abusive relationship, please contact our office.

I have Financial Aid at another school, but I want to transfer to UofL. Can I transfer my aid?

Aid does not transfer. You must confirm that U of L's school code (001999) is on your FAFSA so that we can determine your financial aid eligibility. You will not have to fill out a second FAFSA. Once you have completed your application with the Office of Admissions, we will review your FAFSA. If any additional information is needed we will notify you as soon as possible. To update your FAFSA with U of L's school code:

  1. Go to the FAFSA website and click on Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA under FAFSA Follow-up.
  2. Use your U.S. Dept. of Education PIN to submit a FAFSA correction that lists U of L's school code 001999.

You may also call 1-800-433-3243 and add our school code over the phone. You must have your Student Aid Report (SAR) DRN number to do this.

If you need any assistance please contact our office.

I was selected for Verification. What is that and what do I have to do?

Approximately thirty percent of the student population that applies for student aid is randomly selected for the verification process. It is the federal government's way of making sure students are correctly reporting their information on the FAFSA. The forms to complete this process will be on your ULink account. You will need to fill out the verification form and submit a signed copy of your federal tax forms to the Financial Aid Office. If you are having difficulty printing or accessing these forms, please contact us at (502)852-5511

What will happen if I drop or withdraw from my classes?

Please contact our office and inform us how many classes you are considering dropping or if you are completely withdrawing from school. In some cases no funds have to be returned or canceled. Other circumstances may require that funds be returned to the school and remaining disbursements canceled.
