IRS Data Retrieval

by Partin,Wesley B last modified Feb 13, 2013 11:22 AM

Once you (and your parents, if applicable) have filed an IRS income tax return, you must update the information reported on the FAFSA to reflect your actual tax information.

If you have completed an IRS income tax return, you may be eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, which is the best and easiest way to provide accurate tax information. With just a few simple steps, you can view the information from the IRS income tax return and transfer that information directly into your FAFSA.

You have two options to update your FAFSA once you have filed your IRS income tax return:

1.      Log into your FAFSA and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool* to automatically transfer your IRS income tax return data to your FAFSA, or

2.      Log into your FAFSA and input all tax return data manually.

After updating your tax information on your FAFSA, ensure you sign and submit the FAFSA correction so UofL receives it.

If you have any questions, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Their customer service team is a great resource and can answer questions you may have about the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

Please view the following video for additional assistance:

*As of 2/5/2013 you must wait at least three weeks before using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, for the 2013-2014 FAFSA.
