Pay Groups
Pay Groups, Earnings and Benefit Programs, Holiday Schedules, and Compensation Frequencies
Within the PeopleSoft human resources information system, a pay group assembles a set of employees within a company for payroll processing. Usually, employees within a particular pay group share a number of common characteristics. At the University of Louisville, individuals are assigned to specific pay groups based on the permanence of their designated responsibilities, employment status under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and fringe benefit eligibility; i.e., particpation in retirement, health insurance, and leave accrual programs.
Employees with a full-time equivalency (FTE) of 100% are considered full-time. Most regular status, part-time employees who have an FTE of 80% or greater are eligible for the same benefits as their full-time counterparts, although some benefits such as leave accrual, holiday pay, and tuition remission may be prorated.
Each pay group has a series of common and/or unique controls that govern the way in which payroll processing is handled for everyone within the respective pay group. The major controlling mechanisms are earnings program, benefit programs, holiday schedule, and compensation frequency.
