Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, July 24, 1946. Older brother (Carlton), younger sister (Norma Jean).
Military Service, 1969 - 1971. 1st Lieutenant, Platoon Leader, 1st Battalion (First Strike), 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Vietnam (pictures). Awarded Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal. (In memory of Stephen Smith, 1947-1970).
Married June 10, 1972 to Kathryn Johnson (Katie) of Madison, Indiana (B.S. Stetson University, 1970, chemistry and math) Two children: Julie and David.
Graduate school at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida, 1971 - 1975. Major advisor: Dr. C.Y. Chiou. Research on novel choline acetyltransferase inhibitors. Awarded Ph.D. with honors, 1975.
Research Associate, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee, 1975 - 1977. Mentor: Dr. B.V.R. Sastry. Research on effects of nicotine on placental transport of amino acids.
Accepted faculty position at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, 1977. Assistant Professor 1977 – 1983; Associate Professor with tenure, 1983 – 1992; Full Professor, 1992 – present; Assoc. Dean for Research, 2003 – present; Vice-Chair for Graduate Education, 2009 - present.
