Brief Personal Bio & Links

Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, July 24, 1946. Older brother (Carlton), younger sister (Norma Jean).

Attended Berkeley Prep School, Tampa, Florida, 1961 – 1964  (varsity football and wrestling).  2005 Alumni Achievement Award

Attended Stetson University, DeLand, Florida, 1964 - 1968   Member: Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, Alpha Chi Omega sorority booster,  Graduated with B.A. in Psychology, 1968.

Military Service, 1969 - 1971. 1st Lieutenant, Platoon Leader, 1st Battalion (First Strike), 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, Vietnam (pictures). Awarded Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal. (In memory of Stephen Smith, 1947-1970).

Married June 10, 1972 to Kathryn Johnson (Katie) of Madison, Indiana (B.S. Stetson University, 1970,  chemistry and math)  Two children: Julie and David.

Graduate school at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida, 1971 - 1975.  Major advisor: Dr. C.Y. Chiou. Research on novel choline acetyltransferase inhibitors.  Awarded Ph.D. with honors, 1975.

Research Associate, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee, 1975 - 1977.  Mentor: Dr. B.V.R. Sastry. Research on effects of nicotine on placental transport of amino acids.

Accepted faculty position at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, 1977.  Assistant Professor 1977 – 1983; Associate Professor with tenure, 1983 – 1992; Full Professor, 1992 – present; Assoc. Dean for Research, 2003 – present; Vice-Chair for Graduate Education, 2009 - present.

Visiting Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry, University of Bath, England, 1989 (pictures) in the lab of Dr. Susan Wonnacott.  Research on effects of anatoxin-a on nicotinic receptors in brain.

Personal interests, hobbies, activities:
Boating, fishing, tubing, hiking, canoeing, spelunking at lake house on Rough River Lake, Kentucky
Catamaran Cruisers houseboat at Juniper Beach, Ohio River, Ky
Flying (private pilot 1975). 
Music (piano, guitar). 
Gator and Cardinal football/basketball. 
Family, friends and the household menagerie.
