2011 CEGIB Pilot Project Request for Proposals
The NIEHS Center for Environmental Genomics and Integrative Biology (CEGIB) at the University of Louisville is soliciting proposals for collaborative projects in the area of genomics and integrative biology as it relates to diseases having a significant environmental component. Budget requests should not exceed $30,000 for one year. Funding is expected to begin June 1, 2011. Awardees must cite NIH P30ES014443 on all abstracts and publications emerging from this grant, and provide progress reports as requested.
Only proposals that develop novel research directions in the field of environmental genomics will be funded. Preference will be given to multi-investigator proposals that include young investigators, addressing the NIEHS goal of attracting new environmental investigators. All proposals will be peer reviewed by external and UofL scientific reviewers in coordination with CEGIB staff. Preference will be given to proposals which address the principal biological interests of CEGIB, i.e., cancer, developmental basis of disease, or cardiology. Scoring will be based on relevance to environmental health sciences and environmental medicine, scientific merit and innovation, quality of the genomics and integrative biology dimension, and potential for NIH NIEHS extramural funding. Please see the NIEHS website for common diseases and conditions that evidence shows may be strongly linked to environmental exposures. (link)
Projects should make use of a CEGIB Facilities Core; either the Bioinformatics Biostatistics & Computational Biology Core, Proteomics Biomarker Discovery Core, or the Integrative Health Sciences Core. Applicants are expected to contact Dr. Nigel Cooper (BBCB Core), Jon Klein (PBDC), or Dr. David J. Tollerud (IHSC) for consultation on the use of the facility core and procurement of a letter of support.
FORMAT: Use the NIH PHS 398 forms (link): face page, summary/abstract, key personnel page, detailed budget and justification pages, biosketch with research support, and resources. Follow the PHS 398 format instructions (6/09), except Research Strategy must be 8 pages or less. Faculty salaries are not permitted.
PRE-SUBMISSION: By Monday, March 21, 2011, please e-mail to Denise Hand at email@example.com the tentative title for your project and the names and complete addresses of four scientists (not from UofL) that can be considered as potential referees in the evaluation of your project. Please ensure that the recommended scientists are not present or past collaborators or co-authors with you, your mentor or co-investigator, and will not otherwise be in conflict to review your submission.
SUBMISSION: Completed applications are to be submitted electronically, in Acrobat.pdf format, as an email attachment to enise Hand at firstname.lastname@example.org, along with two hard copies delivered by 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 to:
U. of L. Center for Environmental Genomics and Integrative Biology
