Karen Chandler received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania, and has published on American and African American fiction, autobiography, film, poetry and children’s literature. One of her areas of interest includes folktales, songs, and other vernacular expression. She frequently teaches courses in American literature and African American literature, from introductory surveys to special topics and advanced graduate courses. In addition to her work at UofL, she teaches in Hollins University's graduate summer program in children's literature.
