CIE
Application and Cost Information
Main Street, Louisville
The IESL Program offers an evening course in Communication in English. Classes meet for 16 weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. This is a 3-hour, non-academic credit class. The class for Spring 2009 semester begins Wednesday night, January 7. Applications are available on this web site (below) or by calling the IESL office (852-5901).
What will be taught in CIE?
Communication in English is designed to help non-native speakers of English, advanced proficiency, become more effective communicators in academic, professional and social situations. Classroom activities are designed to give participants the opportunity to improve conversational fluency, an understanding of English vocabulary, and the acquisition of linguistic strategies needed in professional interactions such as discussions and presentations.
Because of the nature of the class, regular attendance is required. Student performance in the course is assessed at the end of the semester as satisfactory/unsatisfactory.
How do I apply?
Complete an application:
Download CIE application in Adobe PDF
Download CIE application in Microsoft Word document
Mail, email, fax, or hand-deliver your application to the IESL office (Room 10, lower level of Gardiner Hall, on the Belknap Campus of UofL). If you are an UofL student or employee, include a copy of your UofL ID (so your ID number is not duplicated). Please make sure we have your current email address, in case we need to contact you.
Applications are accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis. Class size is limited to 15.
What happens after I apply?
First, wait to receive your letter of acceptance. After receiving all your information, the IESL office will send you a letter verifying your acceptance in the program, giving you instructions for registration, and confirming the location of the first class meeting. You should allow 10 working days for your letter of acceptance to arrive.
Second, pay your tuition and fees. You can use the web registration system, the phone registration system, or pay in person at the Bursar's Office. If you are using tuition remission, contact the Bursar's Office at bursartr@louisville.edu (or click on the link below). Applicants who have not paid before January 2 will be dropped from the class roster.
How much does the class cost?
Tuition and fees for the semester are $675 (a price increase may occur; this information will be published as soon as changes are announced by UofL). You must also buy your books and materials (determined by the instructor). The tuition must be paid in full before the first night of class to guarantee a space in the program.
Am I eligible for tuition remission?
Tuition remission is based on your employment with UofL. Because of confidentiality requirements, employees are responsible for finding out if they are eligible for tuition remission. You need to apply for tuition remission after you have been registered for the class. Information on how to apply for tuition remission is available through the Bursar's Office.
