For PhD admissions, we must receive all materials at Graduate Admissions by Jan. 5 of each year for admission to the following Fall term.

We only admit PhD students for Fall term of each year.

All students must have an MA-level degree in hand at the time of matriculation (entrance into our program).

To apply, first complete the online application process to the university. Directions are found here:  http://graduate.louisville.edu/apply-for-admission.html

THEN, send the following by mail to : Graduate Admissions, UofL, Louisville KY, 40292.

1. Complete official transcripts of previous undergraduate and graduate work; (must be by postal mail)
2. Three (3) academic letters of recommendation (that is, letters from faculty members who can address the applicant's academic performance and potential). These should be sealed and signed by the faculty member, or sent separately by them to the school.
3. Official Score reports on the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE);  (the university code is 1838; there is no department code.)
4. A sample of critical writing  (typically 15-20 pages, usually an academic paper); (may also send by email to gradadm@louisville.edu)
5.  A written statement of no more than a thousand (1000) words detailing the applicant’s professional goals in the field of rhetoric and composition
6. International students must also submit official reports of the TOEFL examination.
7. Because all Ph.D. applicants we admit will receive a full funding package for at least four years, applicants must ALSO submit a GTA application (find at  http://louisville.edu/english/graduate/gta_applicationII.pdf).  This application should be sent directly to the Department of English, Attn: Ph.D. GTA Application, Bingham Humanities RM 315, Louisville KY40292 OR to k.habeeb@louisville.edu with the subject line Ph.D. GTA application (your last name).  The deadline for the GTA application is Jan. 5 of each year to begin Fall term only. All other application materials should be sent to Graduate Admissions, UofL, Louisville, KY 40292.
