ENGLISH DEPARTMENT GRADUATE PROGRAM CALENDAR
First weeks of August 2011 (various dates): Mandatory Human Resources Orientation for new GTAs and Fellows (who will start in Fall 2011). (see http://louisville.edu/hr/employment/newemployees/gradhrorientation.html for more information)
August 16 (Tues.) - Graduate School General Orientation (3-8pm) for all new graduate students (MA & PhD) (location still to be finalized per Graduate School). (Please make every effort to attend. This is required for GTAs and Fellows. See http://louisville.edu/graduate/forms/graduate-student-orientation-registration
August 15-19 (Mon.-Fri.): Various mandatory orientations for GTAs and Comp. Instructors (contact Linda Baldwin and Writing Center staff for more information)
August 22 (Mon.) Classes start & last day to register for Fall 2011 semester
August 24 (Wed.) - New PhD Student Meeting with Director of Graduate Studies for English Dept. –7 PM HM300
August 26 (Fri.) Last day to drop/add courses for Fall 2011
August 26 (Fri.) - Last day to declare intention to take Fall 2011 Doctoral Comprehensive Exams and to submit proposed schedule for taking SRA/SLA exams. (SLA/SRA proposals and reading lists, including committee members' names and project titles, are due at least one month prior to the proposed exam date. The ENTIRE committee must approve the proposal/reading list by signature or email to the Graduate Program Assistant before it is submitted. Please submit a digital copy by email and a hard copy for any proposals.)
September 2 (Fri.)- Last day to submit an M.A. thesis prospectus for a December 2011 degree. Prospectus must be approved at least three months prior to final oral examination (defense). Submit a Thesis/Dissertation Advisory Committee Form (with your committee signatures) to the Graduate Program Assistant.
September 5 (Mon.) - Labor Day Holiday (no class; offices closed)
September 12 (Mon.) - New MA Student Meeting (REQUIRED) 7:00pm - 9:00pm, Humanities 300 (this is for ANY MA student who did not attend this meeting in Fall 2010.)
September 14 (Wed.) - Last day to apply for a December 2011 degree (Apply via Ulink.)
September 19 (Mon.) - Last day to submit an M.A. Culminating Project prospectus for a December 2011 degree. Prospectus must be approved by your project advisor by signature or email *before* it is submitted to the Graduate Program Assistant. (please submit a digital copy by email AND a paper copy)
October 5 (Wed.)- Rhet/Comp Doctoral Examination (PhD General Comprehensive Exam) 10am-4pm. Ekstrom Library (various carrels assigned)
October 10 – 11 (Mon.-Tues.) -- Mid-term Break (no class)
October 13 (Thurs.) - Last day to withdraw from a class
October 14 (Fri.) Last day to sign-up to take the Fall Language Proficiency Exam ($20.00 non-refundable CASH fee DUE to the GPA (Karen Habeeb) ). Sample exams are available upon request: email k.habeeb@louisville.edu and specify your language.
October 22 (Sat.)- Language proficiency exams: 9:00am – 12:00pm (Pre-registration required; see above.) Location: HM 300
November 4 (Fri.) - Priority Early Registration opens at 10:30am for Spring 2012. (All English graduate students must be advised by Dr. Kopelson before they may register. Advising begins several weeks *prior* to this date.)
November 17-20 (Thurs. – Sun.) - NCTE Annual Convention (Chicago, IL) (www.ncte.org/annual)
November 22 (Tues.) - Recommended last day for a thesis or dissertation Oral Examination Defense for a December 2011 degree (submit a Oral Examination Schedule form to the GPA at least two weeks prior to defense)
November 23-27 (Wed.- Sun.) - Thanksgiving Break (no class; offices are open 8-12 Wed, otherwise closed)
November 30-December 1 (Wed.-Thurs.) - Completed M.A. culminating projects (approved by your advisor) due to the GPA (Karen Habeeb) by noon, 12/2/11. (Please submit a digital copy by email and a paper copy.)
December 2 (Fri.) - Last day for graduate students to submit defended theses or dissertations to the Graduate School (Houchens 105) for a December 2011 degree
December (Dates and times TBA) - M.A. Culminating projects discussions with your project advisor and members of the CP Review Committee (student is responsible for scheduling these)
December 5 (Mon.) - Last day of Classes
December 5 (Mon.) - Last day for faculty to submit a grade for an Incomplete from Spring 2011 or Summer 2011
December 6 (Tues.) Reading Day (no class) ; Second-year Ph.D. students meet with the Graduate Committee for Progress Interviews
December 7-13 (Wed.-Tues.) - Final exams (click here for schedule)
December 13 (Tues) – Degree Date for Fall 2010
December 16 (Fri) Fall 2011 Commencement Ceremony
December 26-30 (Mon.-Fri.) Winter Break (University holiday; offices closed)
January 5-8 (Thurs.- Sun.)- MLA Annual Convention ( Seattle, WA) (http://www.mla.org/convention)
