ENGLISH DEPARTMENT GRADUATE PROGRAM CALENDAR

August 22 - Orientation for English department GTAs who will be working in the Writing Center (Ekstrom 312)

August 18, 19, and 21- Orientation for English GTAs and part-time instructors who will be teaching comp for the FIRST time (Humanities 221)

August 22 - Orientation for English department GTAs (Both first time and returning) who will be teaching comp(Bingham Humanities Building Room 300

August 8 and 16 - Graduate School General Orientation (8:00-3:30) for new graduate students (attend one session only)

August 25- Classes start & last day to register for Fall semester

August 25 - New PhD Student Orientation – 5:30 PM (Location TBA)

August 29 - Last day to declare intention to take Fall 2008 Doctoral Comprehensive Exams and to submit proposed schedule for taking SRA/SLA exams. (SLA/SRA proposals and reading lists, including committee members' names, are due at least one month prior to the proposed exam date. The ENTIRE committee must approve the proposal/reading list before it is submitted.)

September 2- Last day to submit an M.A. thesis prospectus for a December degree. Prospectus must be approved at least three months prior to final oral examination. Submit a Thesis/Dissertation Advisory Committee Form.

September 1 - Labor Day Holiday

September 8 - New MA Student Orientation 6:00pm - 8:30pm, Humanities 300

September 12 - Last day to apply for December 2008 degree

September 22 - Last day to submit an M.A. culminating Project prospectus for a December degree. Prospectus must be approved by your project advisor before it is submitted to Karen Habeeb.

September 26- Last day to sign-up to take the Fall Language Proficiency Exam ($20.00 non-refundable cash fee DUE to Karen Habeeb)

October 13 - 14- Mid-term Break

October 16 - Last day to withdraw from a class

October 16 - Last day to Withdraw From Class

October 16 to 18 - Watson Conference (University of Louisville)

October 18- Language proficiency exams: 9:00am – 12:00pm (Pre-registration required)

October 27 - Priority Early registration begins for Spring 2009

October 29- Rhet/Comp Doctoral Examination (General Comprehensive Exam)

November 20-23 - NCTE Annual Convention (San Antonio, TX)

November 25 - Recommended last day for a thesis or dissertation Oral Examination Defense for a December degree (submit on Schedule form at least two weeks prior to defense)

November 26-30 - Thanksgiving Vacation

December 1 - Completed M.A. culminating projects (approved by your advisor) due to Karen Habeeb by noon.

December 5 - Last day for graduate students to submit defended theses or dissertations to the Graduate School (Houchens 105) for a December 2008 degree

December (Dates and times TBA) - M.A. Culminating projects discussions with the Graduate  Committee & your project advisor

December 9 - Last day of Classes

December 10 - Second-year Ph.D. students meet with the Graduate Committee for Progress Interviews

December 11- 17 - Final exams

December 17 - Last day for faculty to submit a grade for an Incomplete from Spring 2008 or Summer 2008

December 18 - December Commencement

December 27-30 - MLA Annual Convention (San Francisco, CA)
