Composition Program
Welcome to the University of Louisville Composition Program.
The Composition Program at the University of Louisville regards writing as an essential tool of intellectual inquiry. We want to help students develop their writing as a way of thinking, learning, and communication that will enrich their lives in the University community and beyond. Our courses teach students to think critically and creatively about the writing they produce and the texts they read. It is important in college and in life to develop the abilities to read the work of others, interpret and evaluate the ideas in that work, and find clear and engaging ways of writing about the ideas inspired by that work. We want students to develop writing and reading processes that help them connect thoughtful reading and thoughtful writing in any context—academic, professional, and personal.

The 2010 Symposium on Student Writing
On April 8th, the Composition Program will host Revision by Design, an event that seeks to highlight the difficult decisions writers make as they revise their work. We believe that the best revisions are the ones that look at the overall design of a text--how it is structured, what it is arguing, how it is presented--in order to re-envision new possibilities and new directions. To bring these design choices to light, we are calling for student presentations from writing classes across the university that illustrate the design choices writers make as they revise their work. In this way, the symposium provides an opportunity to make visible the learning and critical thinking processes that are already the cornerstone of most writing classes.
