As you know, Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), passed by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2009, calls for higher and more rigorous learning standards to ensure more Kentuckians graduate from high school ready for college or career, and for collaboration among postsecondary institutions and with P-12 district and school partners to accomplish this goal. Kentucky was the first state in the nation to adopt the Common Core Standards.
Toward these P-20 education outcomes and as per state legislation, Kentucky’s higher education faculty are required to engage in training/professional development to support the outcomes of SB 1 (2009) as an introductory commitment to this education reform. Universities are required to submit documentation to the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) and the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) that appropriate faculty have participated in the training/professional development.
The University of Louisville’s SB 1 (2009) Institutional Plan includes an allocation of partial grant funds provided by CPE to provide a SB 1 Common Core Standards Workshop to be hosted by the University of Louisville.
A University of Louisville SB 1 Common Core Standards Steering Committee comprised of faculty and staff appointed by me and with the support of Dr. Dale Billingsley, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs; Interim Dean Dr. Blake Haselton, College of Education and Human Development; and Dean Dr. Blaine Hudson, College of Arts and Sciences are pleased to extend an invitation to attend a University of Louisville-sponsored SB 1 Common Core Standards Workshop on November 4, 2011, 8:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the University Club on Belknap Campus.
Presenters include university faculty across the state who have both developed the presentations and have been heavily engaged in SB 1 (2009) work.
In preparation for the workshop or in lieu of attending the workshop in the event that you have a calendar conflict, I request that you complete a series of SB 1 (2009) on-line modules. Register for the on-line modules at http://www.kycorestandards.org/courses/courses.aspx Registration information is being collected for workshop attendance and on-line modules completion for higher education faculty.
A website on the Kentucky Council of Postsecondary Education (CPE) presents timely information on the progress and opportunities related to Senate Bill 1 (2009) activities: http://www.kycorestandards.org/
I highly encourage your attendance at the workshop. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to this important P-20 education reform effort in Kentucky.
Dr. Shirley Willihnganz
Executive Vice President and University Provost
University of Louisville
