In this talk, Professor Bertacco will look at the kinds of maps that exiles make for themselves in postcolonial texts and at the relationship between exile and map-making.  Her contention is that if a pre-established geography and the knowledge of the order of places in the world enabled colonization, traveling without a map and, in other words, without directions chaotically becomes a sign of exit from the routes of colonization and an important spur to creativity.

Presented by the Commonwealth Center for Humanities and Society, Faculty Research Forum is open to all: faculty, students, staff, and the public.  This particular Forum connects not only with the Book-in-Common Project of the English Department, but also with the efforts of the Humanities PhD Program’s Internationalization Committee.

This event is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served!  Please come!
