Applying for an English Major
Bachelor of Arts in English
The program for English majors is designed to lay a foundation for careers in writing, teaching, scholarship, and research, as well as for many other types of position in the business and professional world where skills in communication, creative, critical, or analytical writing, public relations, editorial skills, advertising, or the like are required.
In addition to the University admission application, students wishing to major in Students are expected to meet the minimum overall grade point standards for the College of Arts & Sciences. This means students must be in good standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for consideration. In addition, a grade of "D" in any department course 300 level or above may not be used to fulfill a departmental requirement.

Master of Arts in English
The University of Louisville's Master's degree offers emphases in literary studies, creative writing, and rhetoric, composition, and professional writing. All M.A. students take core courses in literature and critical theory, but may take up to fifteen hours of electives in literature, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, or linguistics. Students may elect to write a scholarly thesis as a capstone project or take additional coursework and complete a non-thesis project.

The University of Louisville Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition prepares its students for research and teaching careers in the theory and practice of rhetoric and composition. Most students seek tenurable employment in colleges and universities; a few go into business and industry as writing consultants.
