Listserv
1. What is a Listserv mailing list?
A Listserv mailing list allows you to create, manage and control email lists online.
2. Why are public GroupWise distribution lists with students in them being converted to Listserv lists?
As students migrate (move) from GroupWise to CardMail, their entries in GroupWise distribution lists will no longer work. The need to include students on email lists still exists, so Information Technology is converting them to Listserv to ensure students receive the email messages you send to them using an email list. Listserv lists will continue to appear in your GroupWise address book with the same name they had prior to conversion to Listserv. The Listserv lists are easy to locate and use.
3. How do I encourage Listserv members to reply to the list with group-appropriate content only?
When you send a message to the Listserv, consider adding a disclaimer at the top or bottom of your email. For example:
Please do not reply to this message unless your response is intended for the entire group. Responses to the Listserv should be of interest to the entire list. If you wish to respond to the sender only, open a new email, write your message and send it directly to the individual's email address.
4. What if I want to reply to the sender, but not to everyone on the Listserv?
To reply to the sender only, do not click Reply to the Listserv message; instead, open a new email, write your message and send it directly to the individual's email address.
5. When is it appropriate to reply to the whole list?
Reply to the Listserv list when you are sharing content that is of interest to the entire group.
6. When is it inappropriate to reply to the whole list?
If you have a personal question/comment, sensitive information to share, or a conflict to resolve, please send a separate email to keep those messages private.
7. How do I know if I received a message from a Listserv?
If you believe a message was generated by a Listserv, look at the To field to verify. If the message was sent from a Listserv, the To field will contain the name of the listserv, followed by @listserv.louisville.edu. Your email address will appear in the BC field.
8. How do I log in to Listserv?

10. How do I delete subscribers from from an existing Listserv list?

11. How do I request a new Listserv list?
To request a new Listserv list, go to: http://uofl.louisville.edu/it/listserv/lsrequestform.html
12. Can I retract an email that is sent to a Listserv list?
No, because Listserv messages are sent external to the GroupWise system, you cannot retract a message once it has been sent.
13. What email address should I use to subscribe to a Listserv list?
Use userid@louisville.edu . (Important: If you have set up a nickname - such as jane.doe@louisville.edu - it does not appear when you send an email from CardMail. Instead, your email address appears as userID@louisville.edu . If you are subscribed to any listservs, this can affect your ability to post new messages to the list. IT recommends using your userID@louisville.edu email address when subscribing to any listservs.)
