Dr. Stone's Curriculum Vita
Dr. James Stone is a native of Washington D.C.. He grew up in Virginia where he later managed retail establishments for more than ten years, leaving that career to teach secondary marketing education in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. He earned his B.S. and Ed.D. degrees at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a Master's in School Administration at George Mason University. Stone has held faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Minnesota. He currently is a professor in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville.
Dr. Stone was part of the University of Minnesota team that developed the successful bid for the National Centers in Career and Technical Education (1999). He initially served as the Deputy Director of the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education from 1999-2002 and then Director from August 2002 to October 2007. Stone led the University of Louisville group that successfully competed for the new National Research Center recently awarded by the USDE/OVAE that began operations on October 1, 2007 where he continues to serve as Director.
Dr. Stone has maintained an active program of research over the past twenty years. He has been responsible for more than $25 million in external grants focusing primarily on the role of schools in linking youth and adults to the workplace. He directed or co-directed eight studies in the National Center for Research in Vocational Education-University of California-Berkeley. He is the lead researcher on the Math-in-CTE study of contextualizing math in occupational curricula. He has authored or co-authored more than 90 reports of research, journal articles, or books. Twelve of his studies received awards for outstanding research. He has presented more than 350 papers, speeches and workshops. Previously he served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Vocational Education Research and as Editor. During the 1990s Dr. Stone served as executive director for a regional heritage and arts center.
Beyond the traditional forms of disseminating research results, Dr. Stone has worked directly with schools and school systems supporting efforts to improve occupationally oriented education. He worked for more than five years with Oakland California Public Schools helping to implement a community based, school-to-work plan that included career academy development and school-based enterprises. He worked with a Minneapolis high school developing a program in partnership with the American Indian OIC targeted at urban Indian youth. He recently completed a study of postsecondary occupational/technical education in Minnesota. Most recently, he has begun work with school districts and states interested in implementing the Math-in-CTE approach to curriculum integration.

Exits for the University of Louisville are directly off of I-65 North and South. These take you to the Floyd Street Parking Garage adjacent to the Swain Student Activities Center (SAC).
From I-265 (Gene Snyder) or I-264 (Watterson Expressway), head North on I-65.
From I-71 South or I-64 East or West, head South on I-65.
Traveling South on I-65
- Take I-65 South (Toward Nashville), to the Arthur Street exit (Exit 134).
- Continue to the first stop sign, Arthur street and Brandeis Avenue.
- Turn right onto Brandeis Avenue / Cardinal Boulevard.
- Continue to the first traffic lights.
- Turn left onto Floyd Street.
- Turn right into the Floyd Street Parking Garage, located at the flashing caution lights.
Traveling North on I-65
- Take I-65 North (Toward Indianapolis) to the second Eastern Parkway exit (west 133B).
- There is a stop sign at the end of the exit ramp.
- Veer right, following the curve around to the traffic light at Eastern Parkway. (Denny's is on the opposite corner).
- Turn right onto Eastern Parkway.
- Continue on Eastern Parkway until it dead-ends at Third Street.
- Turn right onto 3rd Street.
- Continue on Third Street to the third traffic light at Cardinal Boulevard.
- Turn right onto Cardinal Boulevard.
- Continue through the first traffic light and turn right at the next traffic light onto Floyd Street.
- Turn right into the Floyd Street Parking Garage, located at the flashing caution lights.
On-Campus Parking
The conference is FREE for students and faculty! Free parking is available at Building 116 and on the street. Paid parking is available at the University of Louisville Floyd Street Parking Garage. The cost of parking for the day is $3.00. ($1.00 or $5.00 notes required to operate parking meter). The Floyd Street Garage is convenient to the conference site: Swain Student Activities Center (SAC).
