The Minority Teacher Recruitment Project (MTRP) at University of Louisville College of Education and Human Development has been awarded a Leadership Council Grant from Citigroup Foundation to conduct it’s acclaimed TeacherBridge Summer Institute! TeacherBridge is designed to recruit high school graduates, non-traditional students, and students at the community college level into teacher education.

TeacherBridge supplements the Minority Teacher Recruitment Project in its efforts to decrease the teacher shortage, particularly as it relates to the number of minority teachers.

TeacherBridge will help shorten these gaps in representation and work further to enrich Kentucky educational experiences through increased diversity among its teachers.

Program

TeacherBridge will provide professional development seminars, skill development, and advising services to support students’ transition from a 2-year college to a 4-year institution. The institute will convene in the summer, June 4-8, 2007, offering two seminars per day for a total 5 days, 10 workshops. Participants will be involved in a number of collaborative activities that will help them become confident in their writing, learn more about careers in education, and better prepare for success at the university level.

While the institute focuses on computer technology, writing skills development, orientation to college, college entrance tests, college admissions, financial aid, and advising, emphasis will be placed on extensive training to learn the ins and outs of the teaching profession, professionalism, resume writing, interviewing techniques, successful financial planning, and setting educational career oriented goals. TeacherBridge participants will receive a stipend during the institute and will emerge with the necessary tools for success in preparation to enter teacher education programs!

Applying

As part of MTRP, TeacherBridge participants will be underrepresented minorities aspiring to become teachers in Kentucky. To apply applicants must provide a complete application containing the following:

• At least a 2.5 GPA
• Participant statement
• Resumé
• Teacher reference
• Official transcripts
