Highlights of Recent Research and Creative Activity

Fall 2010, Dr. Nicole Fenty, assistant professor with the Department of Special Education, received $148,570 from the Kentucky Council of Postsecondary Education for the Collaborative Teacher Training in Reading/Language Arts project. It is an 18-month project that will provide professional development in the new common core standards to general and special middle grades educators, instructional coaches, and other state district personnel in reading/language arts. The project is a collaborative effort between UofL and Bellarmine University. The project team also includes Latricia Bronger (College of Education and Human Development), Sean Fenty, (College of Arts and Sciences), and Kimberly Landrum and Corrie Orthober with Bellarmine University.

Summer 2010, the Mary K. Oxley Foundation pledged $1 million to further support the College's work with the Signature Partnership Initiative (SPI). The CEHD is directly involved in the program through its support of the five SPI schools. The CEHD’s most active partnerships are with the J. B. Atkinson Elementary Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and The Academy at Shawnee (formerly Shawnee High School). The partnership has resulted in student teacher placements at the schools and a pilot cohort of teachers who will pursue National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification.

Summer 2010, Dr. Terry Scott, professor and Chair of Special Education, and Amy Lingo, associate professor with the Department of Teaching and Learning, received $525,000 in funding from the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to provide resources for effective academic and behavior intervention within a Response to Intervention (RTI) model, for schools, districts and cooperatives throughout the state.
