Research Office Decision Making Guide

The purpose of this information is to assist faculty with the thought processes that accompany seeking and obtaining extramural funding. The flow charts for figures 1-4 are meant to be a guide that addresses some important issues.

However, although every attempt was made to include as many situations as possible, a situation may present itself that does not fit well into the standard guidelines. In such an event, work with the Research Office, the Dean, and the Department Chair to determine a course of action.

  • Figure 1 deals with projects involving potential partnerships and collaborations. Please note that one of the goals of the university is to develop and maintain signature partnerships and that this guide is meant to aid in the management of these relationships.
  • Figure 2 provides guidance for service projects and/or programs. Please note that the role of the Department Chair is central to our involvement in pursuit of service related projects and programs.
  • Figure 3 clarifies the beginning stages of the research process (i.e. steps to take before writing the grant application). It outlines some of the items that need to be considered when developing an idea. Again, this is meant as a guide and situations may arise that do not lend itself neatly to this chart. If this is the case, please consult the Research Office, the Dean, and the Department Chair as soon as the opportunity arises.
  • Figure 4 outlines suggestions for the grant writing process. It is meant to serve as a reminder of the main pieces of a grant application and serves as a timeline for preparing your application.
