Minority Teacher Scholarship Program Application

The Minority Teacher Scholarship is available to full-time minority students pursuing initial teacher certification at the University of Louisville. This scholarship is for up to $5,000 annually ($2,500 Fall; $2,500 Spring). Please refer to eligibility guidelines on the attached application. Students must be admitted or qualify for admission to the University of Louisville at the time of application. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.

All materials must be submitted by the following dates:

  • Fall Semester - July 1
  • Spring Semester – November 1
  • Summer – April 1
Please note:  Students interested in applying after the application deadline should contact the MTRP Office directly.  Funds are limited.
Minority Student is defined as "a student who is American Indian, Alaskan Native, Black (not of Hispanic origin), Hispanic (including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central and South American origin) Pacific Islander, or Asian American." (H.R. 4130 (J) 101st Congress 2nd Session).

The Minority Teacher Recruitment Scholarship is available only for students pursuing an initial teacher certification. For purposes of this scholarship program, "initial certification" shall be defined as 1) the first Kentucky teaching certificate in any area; and 2) an additional teaching certificate in an area or teaching specialty other than the area of specialty in which one is currently certified, if the applicant is NOT employed by a school district in Kentucky. The program shall not include academic pursuits designed or entered into for professional development or an increase in rank.

Applicants must be full-time students at the undergraduate or graduate level, and must meet the following criteria:

  1. U.S. Citizen and a Kentucky resident
  2. Admitted to the University of Louisville or qualify for admission at the time of application
  3. Hold a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (high school, college, or post-baccalaureate)
  4. ACT Composite score of 21 or higher, qualifying GRE scores, or qualifying PRAXIS scores
  5. Be a full-time student (undergraduate: 12 credit hours or more; graduate: nine hours or more)

Completed Application must include the following

  1. Application (attached)
  2. Resume
  3. Essay – brief, 1-2 pages typed, double spaced essay addressing "Why I want to Teach"
  4. All official high school or college transcripts in sealed envelopes
  5. Two letters of recommendation from education or business professionals knowledgeable of applicants' academic and/or work performance. (Letters from relatives will not be accepted)
