Collaborative Advocacy: Special Education Law in Practice Conference

The approach of this educational program for students and training session for professionals in law, education, and related fields is to provide the tools for everyone to advocate in the best interest of the student with a disability and to avoid confrontation, litigation, and disputes. This would be accomplished by seeking to ensure that all parties know what is required and have tools to work collaboratively, rather than as adversaries, to provide appropriate special education and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
The conference is being hosted by the University Of Louisville Brandeis School Of Law and the College of Education and Human Development.  Presenters for the conference include attorneys, university faculty members, educators, and administrators and the local and state level.

KATC Regional Workshops begin in October

Workshop attendees
The 2015-16 Fall and Spring regional workshops will focus on teaching socialization and communication to individuals with ASD. Communication and social skills are the foundation of successful life outcomes.  Often times individuals with autism spectrum disorders display difficulty communicating socially with adults and peers which can make it challenging to function in the home, community, and school.  KATC Field Trainer's Michelle Antle, Laura Ferguson and Kim Howard will travel to six different locations in the state to provide training for families, educators and other professionals addressing these issues.  The training includes meals and certificates of attendance.  Professional continuing education credit is also available for many different professions.

Kentucky Autism Training Center is pleased to announce an art program called "New Perspectives Art Classes" which will be held at the Asia Institute Crane House (AICH).  "New Perspectives" is a cross-cultural art program for children with autism spectrum disorders.  Classes are designed to offer a creative outlet for students, reinforce inclusiveness and positive self-image, and highlight the importance of arts education in the development of our young people.

Students will be working with Teaching Artist at the AICH and VSA-Kentucky Roster Artists using a variety of media and processes to create artwork drawing inspiration from Asian art forms.  A final exhibition showcasing the project and artwork will be scheduled at the Crane House at a later date.  The registration has been successful with 24 students and classes will be in October and November of 2015.

The "New Perspectives Art Classes" is a collaborative effort of University of Louisville College of Education, Kentucky Autism Training Center, VSA-Kentucky, Asia Institute Crane House, University of Louisville Autism Clinic, Louisville Dupont Manual High School with funding through the Norton Foundation.
The mission of the Kentucky Autism Training Center is to strengthen our state's systems of support for persons affected by autism by bridging research to practice and by providing training and resources to families and professionals.
