About the Journal of Education for Students Placed At Risk

As the foremost journal aimed at the improvement of the educational experience of at-risk students, the Journal of Education for Students Placed At Risk (JESPAR) assists researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in identifying what programs work in our schools.

JESPAR was co-founded in 1996 at the Johns Hopkins University, the Center for Social Organization of Schools, by Sam Stringfield and John H. Hollifield, with the belief that effective educational practices and programs exist that make a difference in the lives of students who, for a variety of reasons—racial, economic, family, linguistic, or other—are placed at risk of academic failure. We know that you share our commitment to meeting the needs of students from impoverished, minority, and disadvantaged backgrounds. Since its founding, JESPAR has reported on the progress made toward providing all children with a high-quality education and social support.

JESPAR focuses not on "miracle of the month" programs but on real schools achieving real results. In its 13-year history, JESPAR has assessed some of the most important research in educational reform and traced the impact of this reform on policy. Each issue contains research articles and case studies examining programs and practices in our most vulnerable schools, policy guidance interpreting federal and state Title I programs, and up-to-date reviews of significant new publications.

Our special issues present current research and timely interventions on key, nationally known programs, research organizations, and developing pedagogical theories. Our next special issue will address the impact of Hurricane Katrina on education in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
