GSS Newsletter - Week of 9/15

Dear CEHD Graduate Students,

Alright, it's T-minus 2-ish weeks until Fall Break (which is scheduled for Oct. 5 & 6). We're excited for you all and hope you get some rest! We know this whole 2020 year has been a trying one.

This week's spotlight video comes from Dr. Pentecost, Asst. Dean for Graduate Student Success, who discusses the benefits of high impact practices (HIPs) on graduate student success. I bet you didn't even know that some of things you've done in class and on campus are considered HIP. Even with the distance of remote learning, you can still take advantage of HIPs, like, reading up and preparing for the virtual career fair (see info below) engaging in research, attending virtual social events, etc.

Here's a few more dates to include in your planner because this semester will be over quickly. Really.

  • December 2020 Degree Application Deadlines - 10/15/2020 (PRIORITY DEADLINE) and 11/14/2020 (THE TOTALLY LAST DEADLINE). Submit your degree application via ulink. More information about December 2020 Commencement can be found here.
    • Doctoral students - Your dissertation/thesis needs to be on file with the Graduate School by 11/30/2020 & you need to apply for your degree by one of the dates above!
    • Cap & Gown orders must be placed by 11:59p EST on Oct. 12, 2020 via Jostens. You need a cap & gown IF you want to participate in the December Commencement ceremony; if you don't plan to walk, then you don't need your cap & gown. For now, UofL is still planning to hold a Commencement. We don't have more details to share at this time about what it will look like.
  • Fall Internship & Career Fair (Virtual) - 9/30/2020 from 11:00 - 2:00 EST. Do check out the Student Career Fair info page. Preparing for a virtual career affair is a new one to all of us and the University Career Center is pulling out the stops to make sure you are ready with their Mega Career Week events & workshops from Sept. 21 - Sept. 25.
  • Are you thinking about Spring 2021 class registration already? You should be! Spring 2021 registration for continuing graduate students kicks-off on October 30, 2020 @ 10:30 EST.
    • Make sure to check your ulink account for any HOLDS. The "Pre-registration Questions" hold will be on your account every semester before you register. But, you could also have additional holds due to parking tickets, overdue library books, academic probation, etc. Check your ulink account under "Tasks" tile and give yourself time to resolve the hold(s).

So - that's it for this week! It's a light week, we know. Tell us some great things you've been up to by sharing some good news or an awesome accomplishment. We could all use a hooray.
