The degree programs listed below are for teachers who are certified and want to complete a master's degree, or want to obtain additional teaching endorsements.

Early Elementary Education Programs

Master of Education (MEd) in Early Elementary Education (P-5)

This degree program stresses the importance of teachers demonstrating current content and pedagogical knowledge; enhancing their commitment and capacity to teach diverse learners; studying and learning from their practice; and developing as a professional leader. This degree does not lead to certification, since those enrolled already hold P-5 certification. However, students may choose to incorporate coursework that will add an endorsement to their certification in such areas as gifted education or English as a Second Language.

Middle School Education Programs

Master of Education (MEd) in Middle School Education (5-9)

The MEd in Middle School Education degree program helps participants expand their knowledge, skills, and dispositions as teachers. The degree does not lead to certification, since those who enroll already hold 5-9 certification. However, students may choose to incorporate coursework that will add an endorsement to their certification in such areas as gifted education or English as a Second Language.

Secondary Education Programs

Master of Education (MEd) in Secondary Education (8-12)

The MEd in Secondary Education helps practicing teachers learn more about how to help all students be successful through research-based, best instructional practices and how to enhance their professional skills as reflective teacher leaders. The MEd in Secondary Education program does not lead to certification, since those enrolled already hold 8-12 certification. However, students may choose to incorporate coursework that will add an endorsement to their certification in such areas as gifted education or English as a Second Language.

All Grades Education Programs

Teacher Literacy Leadership

The UofL Kentucky Reading and Writing P-12 endorsement prepares you to help students of any age learn to be successful readers and writers, and to be an effective school or district literacy coach. Our programs are designed for those interested in obtaining Kentucky Reading and Writing Endorsement P-12 as part of an M. Ed. in Reading Education or a doctoral degree.

Master of Education (MEd) in Reading and Writing Education (P-12)

The MEd in Reading leads to a state endorsement in Kentucky Reading and Writing for grades P-12. Individuals must have initial teaching certification to apply for this program. The MEd in Reading program prepares students to be reading specialists/literacy coaches in schools and districts.

Master of Education (MEd) in Instructional Technology (P-12)

The MEd in Instructional Technology leads to endorsement for P-12 Instructional Computer Technology. Individuals must have initial teaching certification to apply for this program. The MEd in Instructional Computer Technology prepares students to be teacher leaders and technology coordinators at school and distrcit levels. Preparation for Industry IT Certification is an option.

Special Education Programs

Master of Education (MEd) in Special Education

This degree can be completed to gain expertise in a variety of areas. These include but are not limited to Assistive Technology, Autism, Orientation & Mobility, and Visual Impairment along with other specialty areas. Various certifications can be earned. However, most of these require additional testing. The primary certificates include Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and Assistive Technology Professional (ATP). Other credentials can be obtained, however those would have to be integrated into the degree on an individual basis.

Master of Education (MEd) in Special Education with concentration in Moderate and Severe Disabilities

This degree provides expertise in teaching children and adolescents with Moderate and Severe Disabilities. Individuals must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. This program leads to certification in Kentucky including Functional Mentally Disabled, Mental Retardation and Multiple Impairments. Upon completion of the degree, graduates will be certified to teach students with Moderate and Severe Disabilities, P-12.

Master of Education (MEd) in Special Education with concentration in Learning and Behavior Disorders

This master’s degree provides expertise in teaching children and adolescents with Learning and Behavior Disorders. Individuals must have regular teacher certification to qualify for this program. This program leads to LBD certification in Kentucky. The goal of the program is to offer a Master’s degree that will advance knowledge and further expertise in the area of Learning and Behavior Disorders.
