School Counseling and Guidance
Homepage of the School Counseling and Guidance program.
The School Counseling and Guidance (M.Ed.) program prepares school counselors for positions in public or private elementary, middle, or secondary schools. The program is designed to fulfill entry-level program standards of preparation. It is also intended to enable program graduates to obtain Kentucky Department of Education Certification in School counseling.
The program emphasizes the use of developmental perspectives by school counseling and guidance practitioners, as outlined by the Kentucky Department of Education, and the most innovative school counselor training standards, as described by the professional literature.
Certification
Contact us at ecpy @ louisville.edu with your name, address, and program of interest and we'll send you more information.
University of Louisville students seeking Kentucky school counseling certification must complete a 45 hour master's degree and a 3 hour internship course in school counseling. Notice: Those with a teaching certificate must complete 45 hours of coursework, including a 100 hour practicum. Those without a teaching certificate must complete 45 hours of coursework, a 100 hour practicum and a 600 hour internship.
Those without a teaching certificate and teaching experience may be eligible to be a school counselor in one of the many states that do not require teacher certification to be a school counselor, such as Kentucky and Indiana.
The best thing about the UofL program is that I established close relationships with my professors. They used their professional experiences to inspire me and help me prepare for my school counseling career.
