The Certificate in Health Professions Education (CHPE) is offered through a partnership between the College of Education and Human Development and the School of Medicine. The program is designed for specifically for faculty, future faculty, residents and graduate students in the health sciences including medicine, nursing, dentistry, public health, clinical and allied health professions. The program includes four graduate-level credit courses (12 total credit hours), and the Certificate is an academic credential offered through the U of L Graduate School.

All courses are part of the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) graduate curriculum and may be applied to other degree programs such as a Masters degree. Each course is grounded on the plan for the corresponding course taught in the CEHD but is focused primarily for healthcare educators. For example, instructional techniques include working not only in the classroom, but also at the bedside, and in the clinic. Class projects are designed for the healthcare environment.

Program courses follow the Belknap Campus semester schedule, but meet on the Health Sciences Campus. Courses are taught in the evening and are web-enhanced with approximately 1/3 of weekly work assignments completed online. Students enrolled in other education degree programs may substitute a more advanced statistics course for ELFH 600, if they prefer.

Program Courses

The current course sequence is as follows.

• ELFH 600, Introduction to Research Methods (Fall 2010): A project based course with emphasis on how to teach research problem identification, research methodologies, including qualitative methodology, and introductory statistics. This course is designed for those with a minimum level of research experience.
• ELFH 606, Program Evaluation and Planning (Spring 2011): The purpose of this course is to provide learners with a preliminary understanding of the field of program evaluation. The course will focus on the theories, techniques and current methods of program evaluation.
• ELFH 683, Introduction to College Teaching (Fall 2011): The course focus is on syllabus development, teaching and assessment strategies, student rights, the role of research and publication in the academic arena.
• ELFH 661, Adult Development and Learning (Spring 2012): The purpose of this course is to assist learners in a critical analysis of the theoretical framework of adult learning throughout the lifespan and the developmental issues of adults.

Note: Meeting GRE score and GPA minimums do not guarantee a student will be accepted to the program.

Admission Requirements

• Prospective students must submit an online application for admission to the University of Louisville School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies.
• Students are required to submit all official transcripts. The minimum requirement for admission is the baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Each applicant is required to submit at least two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the applicant's academic and/or professional capabilities and potential are required.
• Each applicant is required to submit official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). To be considered for unconditional admission, students are required to have a minimum combined score of 800. Need help preparing for the GRE? Sign up for a GRE Information Session.
• The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all foreign students from countries in which English is not the native language. Students holding a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States are exempt from this requirement.
• For unconditional admission, students are required to have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average, or 2.75 grade point average for the senior college years.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fee information is available from the Bursar's Office. Tuition remission applies to all University of Louisville full-time employees and most part-time employees.

I have some credit hours from another program/university. Can the credit be transferred?

Once you are admitted to the program, you may request to transfer up to 6 credit hours if your UofL advisor approves the request. Transfer requests are then submitted to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies.

Who can apply for the Certificate in Health Professions Education Program?

The Certificate in Health Professions Education Program is aimed primarily at healthcare professionals who are currently teaching in a healthcare professional educational program and would like to become better teachers. The Certificate program is especially beneficial for physicians, dentists, nurses, researchers, dental hygienists, and others interested in a career teaching at an academic health center.

The University of Louisville Certificate in Health Professions Education program is awarded by the U of L Graduate School and includes four graduate level courses, for a total of 12 credit hours. Students must be admitted to the University of Louisville Graduate School before enrolling in the program.

When and where are the Certificate Courses held?

Classes are held on the University of Louisville Health Sciences Campus. All courses are taught face-to-face in the evening and web enhanced; with approximately one-third of the work assignments completed online using the Blackboard® course management system. Live classes meet for two and one-half hours per week from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., usually on Thursday evenings.

How long does it usually take to complete the Certificate in Health Professions Education Program?

The program consists of four graduate level courses, one course is taught each semester over a two-year cycle, a total of 12 hours of academic course credit. All courses are part of the College of Education graduate curriculum, and may be applied to other degree programs such as a Master of Education, pending approval of your advisor.

What is the estimated cost of the program?

Tuition remission is available to all full-time and most part-time University of Louisville employees. Books and/or other course materials must be purchased by participants.

Are any courses in the Certificate in Health Professions Education Program offered solely on-line?

Courses in the Certificate in Health Professions Education program are taught as a hybrid, which means that some class sessions are traditional face-to-face meetings and other classes are online. At this time, we do not offer any courses that are totally online.

Does the Certificate in Health Professions Education program follow the University of Louisville calendar?

Yes, the courses in the Health Professions Education program follow the University of Louisville Belknap semester schedule.

How do I apply for admission?

Applicants must meet the standards of general admission to the University Graduate School. Please follow the the admissions information to apply to the graduate school.

Is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required?

If you have a terminal degree, (e.g. MD, DDS, etc.) you do not need to take the GRE.

Will the courses taken in the certificate program apply to a Master's or Doctoral program?
