The B.S. in Middle and Secondary Education prepares future teachers who are committed to meeting the needs of individual and diverse learners through dedication and using best practices in a standards-based environment.

Through classwork and clinical field experiences, UofL teacher education students will become critical thinkers who are prepared to meet the demands of today's schools.

The B.S. in Middle and Secondary Education offers undergraduates options for obtaining 5-9, 8-12, or P-12 certification. This unique option allows undergraduates to enter the teaching profession as middle or secondary teachers.

Graduates of the degree program will earn 5-9, 8-12, or P-12 certification.

Admission Requirements

Admission deadline is typically February 1st for the professional program occurs only in the fall of each year.

  • Minimum of 45 semester credit hours required for admission to the professional program, with at least 9 credit hours completed in the content certification area
  • 2.75 overall recommended GPA
  • Successful completion of EDTP 201 and EDTP 107 (or 305) with a combined GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • ACT minimum composite score of 21 is recommended
  • a grade of C or better for English 102 and Speech Communication courses

Members of the admissions screening committee evaluate all application packets after the appropriate admission deadline. Admissions decisions are made by the professional judgement of the screening committee.

Admission to the program is competitive and preference is given to applicants who have strong academic records, experiences and abilities that show promise of a successful classroom teacher. The admissions committee will be looking for candidates who have experience working with children.

Application Deadline

Fall Admission – February 1st by 5:00 p.m.

Please note: If the application deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the admission portfolio may be submitted on the Monday after the deadline by 5:00 p.m.

The following academic requirements, writing and disposition documents, and forms comprise the application to the Professional Phase of the Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education. Please submit all by the application deadline as instructed above.

How to Apply to the Professional Phase of the Program

The teacher education admission portfolio is a combination of forms, transcripts, test scores, and other requirements that applicants will submit to the College of Education and Human Development. If you have met the minimum requirements and met with an academic counselor, you can apply to the professional part of the program. If you have not, then you are encouraged to schedule an appointment BEFORE you start the application process! You may schedule an appointment by calling (502) 852-5597.

Once the application deadline has passed, all complete applications will be processed and sent to members of the faculty admissions screening committee – who will then contact competitive applicants for interview.

Interview (competitive applicants only)

Once all interviews have been completed, the faculty admissions screening committee will make admission decisions. Applicants will be notified by email of the admission decision. Those admitted will receive information about a mandatory orientation session for the program.

Career Pathways Certification

Graduates will receive Kentucky Teacher Certification (Birth-5) upon receiving a passing score from the PRAXIS test.

In addition to the financial aid opportunities offered by the University of Louisville's Financial Aid office, the College of Education & Human Development also has information about financial aid.

Minority Teacher Scholarship Program

Since 1985, the Minority Teacher Recruitment Project (MTRP) has been addressing the shortage of minority teachers in our nation's classrooms. The program is a partnership among the University of Louisville's College of Education and Human Development, the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), and the schools of the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC).

Scholarships of up to $5,000 annually are available to qualifying full- or part-time students of color pursuing initial teacher certification at UofL. Visit the MTRP webpage to view more information about the scholarship program.
