Bachelor of Music in Music Education

Interested in becoming a music teacher?

The Music Education degree could be your start to an exciting and fulfilling career in teaching!

The School of Music offers the Music Education degree. Completion of the degree and certification exams lead to Kentucky certification in grades P-12. Music Education students may pursue a curriculum with vocal or instrumental emphasis.

While students are tracked in fours areas of emphasis within the program (strings, vocal, keyboard, winds/percussion), all students have comprehensive core music and pedagogical training in teaching children of all types and instructional settings. The program aspires to have students develop strong musicianship and leadership.

Every University of Louisville School of Music student must complete the following degree requirements:

  • 2-4 semesters of Piano (individual to major)
  • 4 semesters of Theory
  • 4 semesters of Music Literature
  • Private Lessons
  • Principal Ensemble Performance
  • Recital Attendance (15 per semester for 6 semesters)
  • General Education Requirements (hours vary)

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the teacher education program is competitive. The admission deadline will be made by the professional judgment of the screening committee. Preference will be given to applicants who have strong academic records and positive experiences and abilities and attitude that shows promise of a successful classroom teacher.

How to Apply to the Professional Phase of the Program

The teacher education admission portfolio is a combination of forms, transcripts, test scores, and other requirements that applicants will submit to the College of Education and Human Development admissions counselor, Taleia Fisher. Questions about the application process or the admission portfolio, should be directed to Taleia Fisher at 502-852-0587 or taleia.fisher @ louisville.edu.

Music Education students must apply for admission to Teacher Education to receive permission to student teach. Music Education students should contact Dr. Robert Amchin, School of Music, 502-852-0536, prior to submitting an application to ensure they are ready to apply.

All of the directions and forms are listed as links below. Applicants should print, complete and sign forms as appropriate. Include other materials as directed. Applicants should compile all information and forms, and submit to Taleia Fisher in a sealed envelope with name and telephone number on the front of the envelope. (Do not staple forms, put forms in a binder, or in page protectors.) Application materials can be submitted in person or by mail.

Application Deadline

  • Fall Admission – March 1st by 5:00 p.m.
  • Spring Admission – October 1st by 5:00 p.m.

Please note: If the application deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the admission portfolio may be submitted on the Monday after the deadline by 5:00 p.m.

Once the application deadline has passed, all complete applications will be reviewed. Candidates may be contacted for interview. Applicants will be notified by mail of the admission decision.

Career Pathways Certification

Graduates will earn Kentucky teacher certification in Music Education (Vocal or Instrument), grades P-12.

In addition to the financial aid opportunities offered by the University of Louisville's Financial Aid office, the College of Education & Human Development also has information about financial aid.

Minority Teacher Scholarship Program

Since 1985, the Minority Teacher Recruitment Project (MTRP) has been addressing the shortage of minority teachers in our nation's classrooms. The program is a partnership among the University of Louisville's College of Education and Human Development, the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), and the schools of the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC).

Scholarships of up to $5,000 annually are available to qualifying full- or part-time students of color pursuing initial teacher certification at UofL. Visit the MTRP webpage to view more information about the scholarship program.
