Presenter Bios

Tricia Bronger has extensive experience in special education as a classroom teacher, special education/exceptional children consultant, and Learning and Strategies Branch manager for state and federal programs. As the former Assistant Director of Curriculum Development in the Kentucky Department of Education, her emphasis was in collaboration, curriculum planning, and the use of instruction strategies to respond to student needs. She has been instrumental in collaboration and partnership with general and special education entities. Ms. Bronger has taught numerous courses in special education at the undergraduate and graduate levels to support students with learning and behavior disorders, language learning, and students with an autism spectrum disorder. Malinda Brooks has a Bachelor's degree from the University of the Cumberlands and a Master's degree from Northern Kentucky University. Malinda was National Board Certified in 2007. Ms. Brooks has taught special education at Conner High School for 9 years and is Co-Chair of the Special Education Department. Bobbie Crace is a math teacher at Mercer County Senior High School. She came to Mercer County from Woodford County Middle school, and before that was a fire fighter with the Ashland, Kentucky Fire Department. She has embraced the Principles of Universal Design for Learning and is a strategic member of the UDL Cadre at Mercer County High School and the UDL cadre sponsored by CKEC. Chris Dede is the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. His fields of scholarship include emerging technologies, policy, and leadership. His funded research includes a grant from the National Science Foundation to aid middle school students learning science via shared virtual environments and a Star Schools grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help high school students with math and literacy skills using wireless mobile devices to create augmented reality simulations. Monica Delano is an assistant professor of special education at the University of Louisville. She has been working with individuals with autism and severe behavioral challenges for nearly 20 years. Her current research focuses on the use of video modeling and visual supports to teach communication, social and academic skills to students on the autism spectrum. Carol Edelen is the Parent Leadership Coordinator at the Center for Parent Leadership at the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. Ms. Edelen has consulted, designed and facilitated workshops for parents and schools in and outside of Kentucky based on the Kentucky initiative, the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership. She has trained parents to understand data and standards-based education, and to plan and implement projects that improve student achievement. She continues to work with a cadre of parent leaders in Jefferson, Fayette, Rowan, and Elliot Counties focusing on educational leadership. Roni Gilpin is the UDL grant co-administrator at Mercer County Senior High School. She is a retired special education teacher and has 30 years experience in education. Beth Harrison has worked in the field of disability for over 25 years and holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Kentucky. Since the mid 1980s, Dr. Harrison’s work has focused on the transition from school to community for students with educational disabilities including the importance of self-determination and self-advocacy skills for youth to ensure successful transitions. Matthew Hayes graduated with honors in 1998 from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a minor in Environmental Studies. Since 1998, he has been teaching in the science department at Grayson County High School and has taught AP chemistry, Chemistry II, Chemistry I, Natural Resources and Earth/Space Science. He completed a Master’s degree in Educational Administration in 2003 and completed his Rank I program in 2007. Starr Lewis is the Assistant to the Dean for Teacher Education Partnerships and Development and clinical associate professor at the University of Louisville. Starr received her BA from the University of Kentucky and her MAT from the University of Louisville. Nancy Lindsay holds an M.A., has 23 years experience teaching, and 3 years experience in administration. She is currently the Assistant Principal of Strode Station elementary school. Ms. Lindsay also serves as Building Assessment Coordinator, is a member of the Strode Station Leadership Team, and is a Certified Teacher Evaluator. Ms. Lindsay has been involved with the Strode Station UDL Model School project since its inception 4 years ago. Daniel McNulty currently works as the Northeast Site Coordinator for the PATINS Project of Indiana where he runs a lending library, provides professional development training and works with UDL Pilot Schools among other responsibilities. Mr. McNulty has a B.A. in Special Education and a M.S. in Special Education from Purdue University, West Lafayette and maintains a current Indiana K-12 teaching license in special education and is considered to be a Highly Qualified Teacher according to the HOUSSE rubric. Danna Morrison holds a Bachelor of Arts from Morehead State University and a Master of Education from the University of Louisville. Ms. Morrison currently works at the University of Louisville as the Coordinator of Field Experiences in the Office of Educator Development and Clinical Practice in the College of Education and Human Development. Before accepting this position, she worked as a Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Literacy/Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Contract Consultant. Previous to her work with the ELL Program, Ms. Morrison was a statewide writing consultant involved in designing and delivering statewide professional development as well as facilitating for KDE Standard Setting Process the review of writing standards (K-12) and the development of performance level descriptions and cut points for middle school reading. She spent 25 years teaching middle and high school students in Kentucky. Kim Pommier has a Bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University and a Master's degree from Northern Kentucky University. David Quinn is an Assistant Professor of Educational Administration and Policy at the University of Florida. Prior to joining the University, he was a teacher and administrator in Missouri public schools and most recently worked as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona. Dr. Quinn’s teaching, research and service interests focus on technology leadership issues, data-driven decision making and organizational change and culture. Toyah Robey is a Program Services Manager at KDE delivery. Toyah’s teaching career has focused around working with and advocating for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities at all grade levels. Toyah works with districts, schools, and parents to use strategies that are positive, proactive, and instructional. Amy Shoemaker holds an M.A. and has been a classroom teacher for 9 years (3 of those years teaching special education). She currently teaches 1st grade at Strode Station elementary school in Winchester, KY. Ms. Shoemaker serves as Strode Station elementary school's UDL project director and school technology coordinator. She has also served as Technology Committee Chairperson, STLP Coordinator, and Special Education Collaborative teacher. Jerry Sipes holds an M.A. and has been a classroom teacher for 22 years. He currently teaches 5th grade at Strode Station elementary school in Winchester, KY. Brent Weedman obtained a B.A. in History and Government in 1993 and a M.A.E. in History and Secondary Education in 2003 from Western Kentucky University. His first teaching job was as an ABE/GED instructor, which included work in the prison system. Mr. Weedman has been at Grayson County High School since 1996 and has taught a wide variety of history and social studies classes. Richard White has studied, explored, and developed immersive education applications for the K-12 classroom over the past three years. Mr. White's most recent development project is the open source Edusim project, a 3D virtual world (powered by Croquet) for the classroom interactive whiteboard. Terry Yates is principal of Mercer County Senior High School and author of the original UDL grant.
