About Models Schools
In October 2004, the University of Louisville, in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Education, requested proposals from all public K-12 schools in Kentucky for three School Based Universal Design for Learning grants. These were three-year grants, beginning January 1, 2005 and running through August 1, 2007, which provided each school $30,000 per grant year for a total of $90,000. The intent of this funding was to support development of three working models of how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concepts can be fully implemented across school settings to improve performance of all students.
Specifically, the funding was to support:
- development of a school-wide plan for integrating UDL concepts and technologies into instructional routines to support all students
- systematic implementation of the plan with full faculty and administrative involvement
- demonstration of strategies for creation and delivery of a school-wide accessible digital curriculum
- dissemination of the school-wide UDL implementation plan across the district, region, and state
The University of Louisville received 34 responses, from 28 different counties, to the call for applications. The applications included 16 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 8 high schools, 1 middle/high school, 1 ninth grade school, 1 district-wide application, and 1 model laboratory school.
