ERTC Course Reserve Policies

Photocopying Guidelines and Request Form

Faculty, part-time lecturers and graduate teaching assistants with the College of Education and Human Development, are encouraged to use the E-reserves system of the UofL Libraries system. This system enables an instructor to place materials on reserve electronically so their students can view the materials and print them out from any computer, including a computer in their own home or dorm room.

However, course reserve materials may be placed in the ERTC for photocopying by students, as long as the materials are protected under guidelines designed to assure compliance with U.S. copyright laws. This web page is intended to furnish guidelines to CEHD faculty, to assure that they, the ERTC and the College are not in violation of federal copyright laws with regard to course reserves.

The photocopying guidelines which follow are modeled on the University of Louisville Libraries Course Reserve Policy, which can be viewed in a PowerPoint presentation by clicking on the link above. The guidelines are consistent--almost identical-—with those of the University of California system and Dartmouth College, among other institutions of higher education.

The laws governing copyright restrict the number, frequency and sources of photocopies that may be placed on reserve. For that reason, many of these stipulations are non-negotiable. The ERTC staff will not place any photocopied items on reserve that do not comply with copyright laws and guidelines. These restrictions do not apply to government documents or items now in the public domain.

  1. A signed statement of copyright compliance found on the hard-copy Course Reserve Form must accompany all photocopied items. Persons using the online Course Reserve Form are assumed to have read and agreed to the copyright guidelines which follow.
  2. No more than nine photocopied titles may be placed on reserve.
  3. No more than six copies of each photocopied title may be placed on reserve.
  4. Photocopied items can be placed on reserve for one semester without explicit permission from the copyright holder.
  5. No more than one title by the same author may be placed on reserve at the same time, except for newspaper articles.
  6. No more than three titles from the same collective work or periodical may be placed on reserve at the same time, except for newspaper articles.
  7. No photo copies of workbooks, standardized tests or other like materials will be placed on reserve.
  8. CoursePaks from Cardinal Classware will not be placed on reserve.
