Grawemeyer Award in Education

The Grawemeyer Award in Education is intended to reward the individuals responsible for outstanding ideas in education and to draw attention to those ideas and achievements. The award is designed to recognize a recent achievement rather than a lifetime of accomplishment. View list of previous winners.

The Prize

The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $200,000 paid in five installments of $40,000.

Eligibility

The ideas eligible for nomination may have an individual author or authors, or may be the product of an agency or institution, and the ideas may come from anywhere in the world. Consideration will be given to printed books, articles appearing in scholarly journals, policy proposals, technological advances, software, program initiatives, research reports, public speeches, "white papers," or other widely and publicly disseminated forms, as long as the work has appeared in the recent past.

Criteria for Judging

Nominations will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity, feasibility, accessibility, and scope of potential applicability.

The Nomination Process

The University invites nominations from throughout the world by professional educators, educational institutions and organizations, and editors and publishers of journals, books and software. Self-nominations will not be considered.

To nominate a work, the following must be submitted:

  • A letter of nomination identifying the specific work, idea or achievement being nominated and an explanation of why the entry merits the award. Please provide a complete bibliographic reference is possible.
  • A current mailing address, telephone number, and fax number for the nominee(s).

Upon receipt of the nomination, the nominees will be notified of their nomination and sent a nomination form. The form explains the award conditions and states that all materials submitted will become the property of the University of Louisville. Nominees are required to submit the following materials:

  • A signed copy of the Nominee Form
  • Six copies of the work (if the work is in another language besides English, six copies of the translated work must be provided)
  • Six copies of the nominee's curriculum vita or resume
