The Nystrand Center of Excellence in Education
The Nystrand Center, formerly known as the Center for the Collaborative Advancement of the Teaching Profession, was established at the College in 1987 by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education with support from the governor and General Assembly as the result of a joint application by U of L and Jefferson County Public Schools. The purpose of this Center, which is one of five Commonwealth Centers of Excellence and the only one in education, is to develop, implement and study collaborative efforts to improve teaching.

Center for Environmental Education
The Center, which is a collaborative effort between U of L and the Jefferson County Public Schools, develops, coordinates and documents environmental education programs with a variety of constituencies. The Center is affiliated with the Kentucky Institute for the Environmental and Sustainable Development.

Course Outline and Syllabi
A course syllabi must be prepared following the NCATE format for every class offered in the College of Education and Human Development. These syllabi are to be placed on file with Linda Irwin-DeVitis, Associate Dean for Programs. As outlined in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, within the first two weeks of a semester, each student shall receive a course outline which reasonably details the nature of each course offering and describes appropriate objectives.

Curriculum Changes
Faculty members, through their department heads, must submit the original copy of a proposal to the Curriculum Committee in order to add a new course or to change an existing course or program. All such proposals should be submitted to the Associate Dean for Programs at least two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled Curriculum Committee meeting to allow ample time for copies to be distributed to committee members.

Undergraduate curriculum changes must be approved by the Curriculum Committee of the College of Education and Human Development and then submitted to the Office of the Provost for final approval. Graduate Level curriculum changes (500-level and above) must also be approved by the Graduate School Curriculum and the Office of the Provost prior to implementation. Program changes affecting certification are submitted additionally to the Teacher Education Committee prior to being forwarded to Frankfort for approval.

Departments in the College of Education and Human Development
There are four departments in the College. The departments of Educational and Counseling Psychology, Teaching and Learning, and Leadership, Foundations and Human Resource Education are housed in the Education Building. Education Alumni Association
The Education Alumni Association was started in February 1973 with 55 charter members. The organization has grown and developed into a dynamic group that provides continuing support to the College and its graduates. The association also provides a medium for the promotion of education and for communication with alumni.

Education alumni have co-sponsored lectures and presented awards for achievement to outstanding graduates. The association has provided funds to purchase art works in memory of education faculty members and to procure additional education journals for the library. An Education Alumni Scholarship Endowment provides financial assistance to students in the College.

Each year, the College Alumni Association sponsors special events and trips for interested alumni, their families and friends. The Special Events Committee of the Education Alumni Association organizes these activities.

Education Resource and Technology Center
The Education Resource and Technology Center's primary purpose is to support the curriculum of the College of Education and Human Development. A range of instructional technologies is available along with support personnel and training activities.

Print and non-print media equipment appropriate for use at the elementary and secondary levels and for non-school applications are available. Equipment and reserve materials are housed at the Circulation Desk and include video cameras, VCR and monitors, overhead projectors and computer projection systems.

Computers and associated technologies are located throughout the ERTC. The Computer Lab 201C holds 18 Gateway PCs wired to the Internet with Office 2000 and SPSS software.  In addition, the room is equipped with a laser printer and large screen projection capability.  This room is used primarily for classroom instruction in statistics and computer fundamentals.

The Computer Lab 220 holds 21 PCs wired to the Internet with Office 2000.  In addition, the room is equipped with a laser printer and large screen projection capability. This room is used primarily for classroom instruction on integrated programs, desktop publishing, multimedia authoring and presentation/web authoring.

An Instructional Development Area in the ERTC provides a number of PCs with graphics and text scanning, Internet access, CD-ROM recording, desktop publishing and authoring.

The Teleconferencing Classroom (Room 201B) contains equipment associated with the Kentucky Telelinking Network (KTLN) federally funded project. It houses a VTEL video conferencing system with 18 to 24 student seats and an instructor station. This room is used for two-way local or state-wide conferencing for courses and other activities.

Other computers are located within the open area of the ERTC and are available for walk-up use. There are 12 PCs and two Macintosh computers available for word processing, spreadsheet development, e-mail and the Internet.

The College of Education and Human Development's Instructional Technology Committee meets monthly to provide liaison and communication among departments, the ERTC, the Dean's Office and University Instructional Technology unit. Among other issues, the committee reviews computer software purchase requests to be housed in the ERTC.  Information on Committee activities is available through the ERTC web pages.

Operating hours for the ERTC, including the computer classrooms, are posted on the entrance door, as well as on the ERTC Web pages.  Reservations for ERTC rooms for class purposes should be made at the ERTC front desk. Off-Campus Class Meetings in Bad Weather
The following guidelines shall be used for determining class meetings at off-campus teaching centers during bad weather:

  2. When the public schools in the area of the off-campus teaching center dismiss early due to deteriorating road conditions, the University of Louisville off-campus classes held at such sites will be canceled.

  3. If road conditions become unsafe for passenger car traffic between the regular closing time of schools and the time for classes to meet, every effort will be made to place a cancellation announcement with the radio stations.

  4. If any doubt exists about the meeting of off-campus classes, information will be available in these offices: Dean, College of Education and Human Development (x6411) or U of L Office, Fort Knox (x6444)
