Bridge Builder Student Leadership Scholarship

The Schmiedeler family created this scholarship fund to encourage and reward the development of student leaders that demonstrate a commitment to "caring more about others than they care about themselves".

Leadership demonstrated beyond title or role within an organization.  Leadership can be demonstrated within or outside of the UofL Campus community. Applicants should clearly exhibit ethical leadership, servant leadership, and spiritual leadership

This scholarship is awarded by University of Louisville Student Affairs to students who have demonstrated exceptional character and leadership abilities as well as proven academic skills. The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated servant-leadership by giving their lives to serving others. This scholarship is valid for up to 126 attempted undergraduate hours of college credit including hours transferred from other colleges and universities.

Two $1,000 will be awarded for Fall 2013

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student is required to:

1) have lived on campus prior to May 30 and have a space reserved for the coming year (eligible housing includes The Province, Cardinal Towne, and The Bellamy),

2) maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average,

3) be enrolled as a full-time student,

4) complete Freshman LEAD during the first year of enrollment,

5) be involved in a volunteer or service activity on campus,

6) have a positive influence on the UofL campus,

7) submit an annual renewal form (there is no guarantee of renewal), and

8) complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all other required financial aid applications.

THE BRIDGE BUILDER
An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim-
That sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting strength in building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."
