Computer Addresses

This is information we need so your computers will work as soon as we plug them in at the new location.

To get the data we need to activate your computer in it's new home, sit down at your computer and do the following:

  1. Press and hold down the windows key (it's usually between the left ctrl and alt keys) and while holding it down tap "R".
  2. That will bring up something called a "run box." In the blank field in the run box, type in "cmd" and hit Enter.
  3. That will open up a black box. In that box type "ipconfig /all". You will see a bunch of weird stuff go scrolling by.
  4. Scroll back up looking for something called "Ethernet adapter." You will know you found the right thing if there are a bunch of numbers in the set that start with 136.165.
  5. One of the lines will be titled "Physical Address" and will have six sets of two digit numbers in it. For example, mine looks like this 00-25-6a-c3-36-34.
  6. Copy that number into the Number field below and put your UofL username in the Name field. For computers currently unassigned, put the job title in the Name field. For others just assign names (lab1, lab2, test1, etc.).
  7. Type exit and hit Enter in the black box to make it go away. Or just click the "X."
