The graduate program in periodontics is directed by Dr. Henry Greenwell.  Dr. Greenwell received his DMD degree from the University of Louisville in 1977 and his certificate in periodontics and MSD degree from the School of Dentistry at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH in 1982.  He began teaching at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1988 and currently serves as a professor in the Department of Oral Health and Rehabilitation.  Dr. Greenwell is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Margaret Hill received her education at the University of Eastern Kentucky with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She subsequently attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, earning her DMD in 1987 and her certificate in General Practice Residency in 1988.  Dr. Hill completed her Periodontics residency in 1990 at the University of Kentucky.  Dr. Hill's research is in clinical periodontics. She currently serves as the Women’s Liaison to ADEA, Chair of the Assessment and Effectiveness Committee, serves on the DMD Curriculum Committee, Graduate Research Program Oversight Committee, to name a few. Dr. Hill has published numerous publication and journal articles.

Dr. Diksha Katwal graduated from College of Dental surgery, Manipal, India with a BDS degree in 2002 where she then worked as a private practitioner for 3 years. She completed her DDS from University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and MSD in periodontics from Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Katwal worked as part time faculty for 3 years at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. She now works at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry as Assistant Professor. Her research interest includes clinical and nonclinical periodontics. Her memberships and services include the American Academy of Periodontology, Nepal Dental Association, Nepalese Society of Periodontology and Oral Implantology.

Dr. John Virag graduated from the University of Denver in 1980 with his BA degree, the University of Kentucky with his DMD degree in 1984 and his MSD Periodontology from the University of Minnesota in 1988.  His current research is the genetic influence on periodontal disease states and is the Periodontology Discipline Coordinator. Dr. Virag’s service includes the Clinical Operations and Patient Care Committee, the Student Progress and Promotion Committee and the Vice-Chair for the Faculty Assembly Committee.

Dr. Hima Bindu Dukka graduated from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India with her BDS in 2007 and completed a Periodontics residency from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 2015.  Dr. Dukka also received a Master’s in Public Health in Epidemiology from Fairbanks School of Public Health, in Indianapolis, IN.  Currently an Assistant Professor in OHR and the Course Director for Periodontics III, Dr. Dukka’s research focuses are in Oral and systemic association, Implantology and Biologics in Periodontal Regeneration.  Her memberships and services include the American Academy of Periodontology, American Association of Women Dentists as well as, a Reviewer for Journal of Periodontology.

Dr. Abhishek Patel graduated from M.P Dental College and Hospital, India with his BDS in 2010, received his certification in Periodontics and Implantology along with a M.S in Dentistry from the University of Louisiville, School of Dentistry in 2016. Dr. Patel’s research focused on ridge augmentation comparing demineralized bone matrix to harvested autogenous chips. Dr. Patel is currently a clinical instructor for the 3rd and 4th year DMD students. He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the Academy of Osseointegration."

 

Dr. Pin-Chuang LaiPin-Chuang Lai, DDS, PhD

Dr. Piin-Chuang “Patrick” Lai received his DDS from Taipei Medical University in 2004 and his Certificate in Periodontics from Ohio State University in 2015.  He also completed his PhD in Oral Biology from Ohio State the same year. Dr. Lai’s research focus is on Bone Augmentation & Periodontal Plastic Surgery and the Treatment of Perio-implantitis. Dr. Lai is currently a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the International Association for Dental Research and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

 Dr. Doug Lowy received his DMD degree from the University of Louisville in 1985 and his certificate in periodontics from the University of Connecticut in 1987. Prior to teaching, Dr. Lowy was employed as a clinical psychologist in Morehead, KY. At the University of Louisville, Doug is course director of Periodontal Modular Learning. Dr. Lowy maintains a private practice specializing in periodontics.

Educated at the Medical College of Virginia–Virginia Commonwealth University (undergraduate) with a BS in Dental Hygiene, Dr. Mercke practiced dental hygiene for eight years before attending the University of Louisville-School of Dentistry, earning a DMD in 1992. Dr. Mercke practiced General Dentistry for twenty years in Virginia before joining the faculty at U of L.
