School of Dentistry
The ULSD Pediatric Dental Residency Program has three residency positions open each year for a 24-month certificate program with the option of completing a master's degree in Oral Biology. The program is a school-based program with close association with Kosair Children's Hospital. Call is taken at Kosair and most rotations occur there. Kosair is the only exclusively pediatric hospital in the state of Kentucky.
The graduates of the postdoctoral Pediatric Dental Residency Program are capable of being successful in practice, in academics, and/or research. They have evidence-based knowledge of "best practice" in all areas of pediatric dentistry from infant oral health to trauma and hospital dentistry.
The residents treat patients in the clinic on the 3rd floor of ULSD and at Home of the Innocents. Rotations are completed at Kosair Out Patient Surgery, Sedation Clinic, Emergency Department as well as University Child Health Specialist-South and the Craniofacial Team at the Commission for Children with Special Healthcare Needs.
The didactic portion of the curriculum provides in depth information in growth and development, current restorative, interceptive orthodontic care, pharmacology, statistics, anatomy, oral biology/research methods, microbiology, immunology, genetics and pathology.
Research projects are required. This research project must result in a poster or paper that can be presented at the Kentucky Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry meetings.
The program starts July 1.
