Application Process
Applications for financial aid are available beginning in January for the following academic year. It is important for you to apply early. Students who complete their application by March 15th priority deadline increase their potential to receive the maximum aid available from each of the financial aid programs.
Students often find the financial aid application process confusing. To help you apply for financial aid and understand the process, the major steps are outlined below:
Step 1: Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid for 2009-2010
For new students who did not complete a FAFSA in 2008-2009
In order to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you will need a copy of your 2008 Federal Tax Return. If you are applying for Exceptional Financial Need, Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students, Loan for Disadvantaged Student or Health Professions Loans you will also need to complete the parental section of the FAFSA (regardless of dependency status). These scholarships and loans are offered to “economically and educationally disadvantaged students’. To complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) visit the FAFSA website. The University of Louisville School Code is 001999-00 and if you are in need of help, contact the FAFSA help line at 800 801-0576.
For renewal students who did complete a FAFSA in 2008-2009
When renewing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you will need the following:
- Know your PIN To file your renewal FAFSA on the web, you will need a special code called a PIN. The Department of Education mailed a PIN to you when you applied last year. If you do not have your PIN, you can request another copy by going to pin.ed.gov and selecting the link "Request a PIN be e-mailed to me." This process will take up to 72 hours.
- You will also need a copy of your 2008 Federal Tax Return and W-2s.
All renewing students have the option of submitting a renewal or a new FAFSA. Please note: the new FAFSA will add a few weeks to your processing time.
To complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) visit the FAFSA website. The University of Louisville School Code is 001999 and if you are in need of help, contact the FAFSA help line at 800 801-0576.
Should I Provide Parental Information?
The School of Dentistry applies for funds from the Department of Health and Human Services for the following loans and scholarships: Health Professions Loan, Loan for Disadvantaged Students and Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. One third of all dental students receive the Health Professions Loans. Parental information is needed for theses loans and scholarships to determine who is eligible. Therefore, you must provide the parental data even though you will be completing the FAFSA as an independent professional student. Please feel free to contact Laurie O’Hare if you have any questions.
Step 2: Submit the free Application for Federal Student Aid and Student Aid Report
- Timeline: After the FAFSA is completed online
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is submitted to the Federal Processing Center for analysis. The processing center will mail or e-mail a Student Aid Report (SAR) to you and the Financial Aid Office. If you complete the FAFSA with an e-mail address the Federal Processing Center will automatically e-mail your Student Aid Report to you.
Step 3: Verification or Missing Documentation
- Timeline: 2-4 weeks later
You will be chosen for verification if you have completed the parental part of the FAFSA in order to try and qualify for Health Professions Loans, Scholarships and Loans for Disadvantaged Students. You will be asked to submit the following through ULink. Please follow the directions for first-time users. What you need:
