Community Service
The ULSD Community Service Program is actively involved in more than 90 initiatives annually, in addition to extramural experience courses, required community service events and students’ unreported volunteer activities.
Each month, ULSD faculty, students and staff accumulate more than 6,000 community contacts. Major service events include:
- Smile Kentucky
- Sealants for Kentucky Children
- Kentucky Cancer Partnership Oral Cancer Screening
- Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures
- Freshman Halloween Project
The School of Dentistry also provides information and supplies to local health fairs, staffs dental screenings and offers classroom and community education. Most projects are ongoing or require continuous planning with several professional associations.
All of these activities support the program’s six basic goals:
- To promote oral health in underserved communities
- To empower people in underserved communities to take charge of their own oral health
- To provide quality dental care where it’s otherwise not available
- To encourage pursuit of careers in the dental profession
- To provide role model leadership
- To mobilize community partnerships
