Dentistry Alumni Day CE and Reunion Weekend to be held Oct. 5-6

The University of Louisville School of Dentistry is hosting a special Alumni Weekend on Oct. 5-6, which happens to coincide with the UofL vs. Utah football game in Louisville.

The weekend activities include a leadership donor breakfast, continuing education courses, the Wood E. Currens ’67DMD room dedication, and reunion dinners for classes ending in “2” & “7.”

Alumni Weekend begins a change in the School of Dentistry reunion schedules, says Jill Elswick, alumni manager for the School of Dentistry.

“Historically reunions have been held in the spring during the annual Kentucky Dental Association meeting, but this year the KDA conflicts with the ULSD graduation, Elswick says. “Because of this conflict, we are changing the reunion schedule to the fall, when many alumni return for the ULSD Alumni Day CE program.”

The school hosts reunions on a five-year schedule. This October, the classes of 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002 will celebrate their reunions.

Alumni Weekend Schedule

UofL vs. Utah Tailgate

On Friday, the School of Dentistry alumni and their families are invited to a ULSD tailgate before the Cardinals take on the Utes at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. The tailgate begins at 6 p.m. at the WhipMix Company site, 110 Central Avenue, across from the stadium. Kick off is at 8 p.m.

At the tailgate, food will be provided free of charge, however the Boy Scouts are charging $10 to park at WhipMix. There is a limited supply of football tickets at a discounted price for this game only in ULSD block for Reunion and SCS members. Please call Jill Elswick at 502-852-2892 for more information.

Second Century Society breakfast

Saturday begins with an 8-9 a.m. breakfast for members of the school’s Second Century Society, which honors alumni and supporters who have made at least a $500 annual gift to the school. The breakfast will take place at the Galt House West, 130 N. 4th Street.

Continuing Education Program

On Saturday, Alumni may participate in the Alumni Day continuing education program at the Galt House West, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Additional specialty courses will be available on Friday as well. Complete listing of course selection and registration instructions may be found on the Dental School website
under Continuing Education or by calling Dr. Mike Mansfield at 502-852-2099.

Currens Room Dedication and Alumni Reception

Alumni are invited to a room dedication and alumni reception on Saturday at 5 p.m. In appreciation of an incredible gift from Professor Wood E. Currens ’67DMD, study room 135A in the Junior/Senior Laboratory will be named in his honor. Currens has been a member of the faculty since 1970 and has served as acting dean for the school, acting chair for two departments and assistant dean and/or associate dean for clinical affairs, student and alumni affairs, and alumni and professional relations.

Class Reunions: 2s and 7s

After the room dedication and alumni reception on Saturday, DMDs whose graduation year ends in a “2” or “7” are invited to their class reunion dinners, to be held at 7:30 p.m. at various downtown locations. The locations will be announced by class reunion chairs in upcoming class letters.

“Last year’s reunions drew more than 275 graduates from the classes ending in 1s and 6s. We hope this year brings back many more familiar faces,” Elswick says.
