In this section we catch up with former ULSD faculty and staff to find out what they're doing now.
Dr. Rowland Hutchinson
Since his retirement as dean of the School of Dentistry in 1998, Dr. Rowland Hutchinson hasn’t allowed any grass to grow under his feet.
“When you retire, people think you go sit in a rocking chair,” Dr. Hutchinson said. “It wasn’t true for me.”
After leaving UofL, the former dean was elected president of ADEA and represented dentistry at the national and international level from 1999-2001. He then served from 1998-2009 as the director of a leadership institute for all dental school deans in North America.
Hutchinson has also served on the advisory board for the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, as it sought to become the first dental school in Arizona. He's currently serving on the local Whip Mix Corporation Board of Directors and on the Dental Dean's Advisory Board of the new Western University School of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.
Since Dr. Hutchinson left UofL, he’s been honored with several awards. The University of Pennsylvania gave him the Alumni Award of Merit in 2008 during his 50 year reunion, and the ADEA recently presented him the Presidential Citation at its annual meeting in Feb. 2010.
For fun, Dr. Hutchinson loves taking cruises with his wife and playing golf. Spending time with grandchildren is also high on his priority list.
Dr. Hutchinson was dean from 1991-1998. He came back to serve as interim dean from 2005-2006.
