Residency Spotlight

The Graduate Orthodontic Program has undergone a recent “face lift” to complement the recent renovation of the dental school. The updates include a larger resident’s room, updated treatment planning room, larger lab, and new floors and ceiling. New and updated conference rooms and a VTC room were also added to the 3rd floor for access by all the residency programs at ULSD.

The Ortho-residency is now in its 3rd year as a paperless clinic. The residents have an orthodontic version of Axium that has Dolphin 2D and 3D imaging integration. DMD orthodontic consults are now fully electronic, and DMD students and residents can share notes over Axium during interdisciplinary cases. Improvements continue to be made to the system in order to enhance the Orthodontic Program’s clinical operations, patient care, student education and research activity.

One of the Graduate Orthodontic Program’s unique strengths remains the clinical, didactic and research experiences provided to students. This year the program will continue to focus on refining the curriculum and incorporating innovative yet established approaches to clinical practice, strengthening the research program and updating the departmental website. In order to achieve these goals, the department is committed to actively recruit an additional full-time faculty member over the next year. The department is proud to have retained three full-time faculty and numerous part-time faculty members over the past several years – this stability has added to the strength of the program.

The program currently has 12 residents, three of which are ULSD graduates. Interviews were recently conducted to select next year’s class through the match program.

The 2nd year residents recently returned from the Charles Tweed Orthodontic course in Tucson, Arizona; it is the oldest continuing dental education course in the world. Many of the orthodontic residents also will be traveling to Hawaii for the American Orthodontic Association’s annual conference in May 2012.
