Dr. Ken Bain, author of What the Best College Students Do, will help you explore who you are now and who you want to become. It’s all about you! Learn what people like Stephen Colbert to Jeffrey Hawkins did during college to become the successful people they are now.

Make the most of the program by participating before, during and after in several ways:

  • Use the hashtag #bestUofLstudents to answer the question, "What do the #bestUofLstudents do to be successful during and after college?" Respond via Twitter or Instagram.
  • Attend other events that will help you put into practice the advice shared by the successful people from the book!
    • What the Best College Students Do: Conversation Cafe
      The Office of First Year Initiatives and the Porter Society are sponsoring a three-part series of conversations about What the Best College Students Do. Free lunch and conversation! Learn more here.

    • Extra Credit for A&S; Gen 101 & 102
      For some students, extra credit can be earned for attending the event! Check with your instructor!

    • Residence Hall Bulletin Boards
      Have you seen this event on bulletin boards in your halls? Talk to your RAs about What the Best College Students Do and learn more on your floors!

About Ken Bain

President, Best Teachers Institute, Ken Bain spent much of his academic career at Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and New York University, before becoming provost and vice president for academic affairs, and professor of history and urban education (National Center for Urban Education), University of the District of Columbia. In the 1970's and early 80's he also served as director of that school's University Honors Program.

His book What the Best College Teachers Do (Harvard University Press, 2004) won the 2004 Virginia and Warren Stone Prize for an outstanding book on education and society, and has been one of the top selling books on higher education. The book’s sequel, What the Best College Students Do, has also become an international best seller. Dr. Bain has won four major teaching awards.
