Hazardous Materials Drill
U of L and Louisville emergency responders simulated gas leak at the Belknap Research Building on October 14, 2008. The drill began at 9:20 a.m. with a 911 call to report an explosion and possible hazardous material release.
The participants were informed that they were participating in a drill, but they did not have any idea of the type of emergency and had respond as they would in a real situation. The drill was set up to test every step of emergency response, from emergency notification of responders and UofL faculty, staff and student; to collaboration among city and university personnel in emergency operations and use of equipment.
The drill involved a simulated chlorine gas leak near the Belknap Research Building's clean room. The situation required building evacuation and medical treatment of four people.
The number of participants was over 100 and included Louisville Fire and Rescue, Louisville Metro EMS, Louisville Metro Police, Louisville Metro Health and Wellness Department, Louisville Metro Emergency Management Agency and Louisville Metro Arson Bureau. UofL participants included Belknap Research Building occupants, Department of Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Physical Plant and Communications and Marketing, as well as the Speed School of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences.
