Porter LogoPorter College has been created to help incoming Porter Scholars acclimate to their new "scholarship" family and understand their personal obligations as outlined by both the scholarship and society's terms and statement of agreement. Based on the four pillars of the Porter (Scholarship, Leadership, Service & Heritage), this 3-day "retreat" will provide opportunities for the newest members of our campus to virtually travel from their first day of class to the day they receive their diploma and then on to greater opportunities found in the form of Alumni alliances and partnerships. Scholars will be exposed to an array of college success strategies for both personal, professional and academic development.


Monday, August 17th: Porter Scholars will explore major aspects associated with the freshman and sophomore classifications throughout the day.

Tuesday, August 18th: Porter Scholars will explore major aspects with the junior and senior classifications throughout the day.

Wednesday, August 19th: Porter Scholars will explore major aspects associated with the graduate student and alumni classifications throughout the day.

TOP 10 PORTER COLLEGE 2009 HIGHLIGHTS

Scholars who elect to participate in this 3-day event (held prior to the start of classes) will have the opportunity to:

10 Meet the family of Mr. Woodford R. Porter, Sr. for whom the scholarship is named
 9 Learn the history of the Porter Scholarship Society
 8 Review each section of the Society of Porter Scholars agreement
 7 Connect to non-profit agencies, community organizations, and campus departments to secure mandatory community service opportunities
 6 Identify personality traits and individual strengths through an assessment-based program
 5 Learn about the MAPS (Monitored Academic Preparation for Success) program for Porters administered by REACH
 4 Create Individual Action Plans (IAPs) and co-curricular transcripts (CCTs) for your “out of classroom” engagements and experiences
 3 Discover preparation and testing tips for graduate, medical, law and other professional schools
 2 Network with fellow scholars, faculty and staff 
 1 Prepare for Welcome Weekend! (August 20 – 23)
