NATIONAL SCIENTISTS WORKING TO IMPROVE WEATHER PREDICTION MEET AT UofL

Twenty-five of the nation's top atmospheric and oceanic scientists -- including the head of the federal agency responsible for weather prediction - are meeting at the University of Louisville Thursday and Friday.

Louis Uccellini, director of the National Weather Service's National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), and other workshop participants will be available to talk to reporters Friday between 10a.m. and 11 a.m. The meeting will be at the Gheens Science Hall and Ranch Planetarium.

The group's goal is to improve weather-prediction accuracy by taking a fresh look at the large computer models used for the predictions. University of Louisville scientist Timothy Dowling, director of the Comparative Planetology Laboratory at the Speed Scientific School, said the group is working on making computer models better at tracking the movement of water vapor and pollutants over large distances.

Weather prediction has a significant impact on many businesses. United Parcel Service Air Hub meteorologist Randy Baker will speak to the group at a 7 p.m. dinner Thursday at Dillon's Steakhouse.

This is the second national workshop for the group; the first hybrid-isentropic modeling workshop was in August 2000 in Madison, Wis. Check the Workshop Schedule for more about the Louisville meeting.
