Digital Storytelling Workshop

In the spirit of this year's Watson Conference theme, we are excited to host a three day digital storytelling workshop on the University of Louisville's campus October 13-15, 2008.

Highlights

  • We want to offer scholars from around the country the opportunity to actually share the experience of digital composition and production.
  • Participants will be encouraged to compose stories focusing on any subject they choose, be it academic or personal.
  • Participants will have the option of publicly screening their stories during a “World Premiere Digital Stories” session during the conference itself.

Workshop Schedule (9am to 5pm each day):

  • Day One: Introduction to digital storytelling, writing assignments, storycircle and discussion. Photoshop tutorial, image work and script review.
  • Day Two: Voiceover recording and Final Cut Tutorial. One-on-one editing work.
  • Day Three: One-on-editing work, Final Showing, group discussion and media duplication.

Workshop Components

Workshop participants will focus on four primary aspects of new media and collaboration:

  • The Seven Elements of Digital Storytelling
  • Group Script Process
  • Hands-On Software Tutorials
  • Production Support and Management

The Center for Digital Storytelling

Workshop instruction will be provided by the Center for Digital Storytelling. Theirs is some of the oldest (relatively, of course) and most important work being done with new media composition within and outside academia. The Center for Digital Storytelling website offers dozens of playable stories, a history of their organization, and links to valuable resources. Daniel Weinshenker, Director of the Center's Denver office will be in charge of teaching the Watson Conference Workshop.

Resources Provided

The Watson Conference will provide each participant with a laptop (Windows Vista OS) and software (Adobe Premiere Elements, Adobe Photoshop Elements) for the duration of the workshop. Each workshop participant has the option to use his/her own computer and software. However, we cannot install software on a participant's personal machine, nor can we guarantee instruction in other software.

Registration and Fees

  • Workshop Fees: $400 for students and $600 for faculty. These costs will cover three days of instruction, breakfast and lunch each day of the workshop, and the use of a conference laptop for the duration of the workshop.
  • Registration Form (PDF)
  • Conference hotel rates will be extended to cover workshop dates for participants.
  • *Enrollment will be limited, so make sure to submit your registration as soon as possible. Applicants will be accepted in the order their registrations are received.
